Wat Nakhon Chum is located on the Phichit Sam Ngam–Wang Chik Road (Highway No. 1068) at approximately kilometer marker 9. This temple is an important historical and cultural site in Phichit Province, dating back over 800 years to the Sukhothai period. The temple’s most remarkable feature is its ancient ordination hall (ubosot) on the east side, constructed with brick and plaster and topped with a wooden roof joined using wooden pegs instead of nails. Ventilation openings replace conventional windows, giving the ubosot a distinctive appearance and reflecting the architectural style of Sukhothai.
This ubosot was once the home of Luang Pho Phet, a revered Buddha image highly respected by the local community. Today, Luang Pho Phet has been enshrined at Wat Tha Luang, but the ubosot still houses a large brick-and-plaster Buddha image in the Sukhothai style. This principal Buddha image was historically used in important ceremonies, such as the Phra Phithat Satya water-offering ritual. The placement and decoration of the Buddha image showcase the exquisite artistry and attention to detail characteristic of ancient Thai architecture.
The atmosphere at Wat Nakhon Chum is serene and shaded, with large trees and open spaces providing a relaxing environment for visitors. Tourists and history enthusiasts can closely observe the ancient structures and learn about Sukhothai architectural techniques. Visiting the temple offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the beauty of ancient Thai art and to understand the religious beliefs and ceremonial practices of people in the past.
Wat Nakhon Chum is not only a sacred religious site but also an important center for learning about history and culture. Preserving the ancient ubosot and Buddha image allows future generations to witness authentic Sukhothai architecture and gain insight into the spiritual and cultural practices that have shaped local communities. A visit to Wat Nakhon Chum is like traveling back in time to the Sukhothai era, where faith, art, and history harmoniously converge.
Visitors can fully experience the cultural richness of the temple through paying respects to the Buddha images, participating in religious rituals, and learning about ancient construction techniques. Photographing the ubosot and the large Buddha image provides an excellent opportunity to capture beautiful memories while promoting ancient Thai culture to both domestic and international audiences. Wat Nakhon Chum is therefore a destination that combines history, art, and sacred spirituality in one place.
For those interested in cultural tourism, Wat Nakhon Chum is a must-visit site. It is conveniently located on a main road in Phichit Province, with scenic surroundings that enhance the visit. A trip to this temple not only offers insights into religion and history but also inspires the preservation of Thai culture and art for future generations.
