Chang Jo, Banjong Hemthong, began his path as a knife maker through a deep fascination with the beauty and character of knives. He traveled to study knife making with traditional master craftsmen in several parts of Thailand, especially in Chiang Mai and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, both of which are well known for their knife-making traditions. From these experiences, he brought together traditional knowledge with metallurgy and modern technology in order to refine the production process and achieve the highest quality possible.

 

Chang Jo’s concept is to create a balance between old wisdom and new technology. He sees knife makers as falling into two main groups: traditional knife makers, who rely on classic forging processes, and modern knife makers, who use tools and technology to improve production efficiency. He therefore chose to follow the path of a modern knife maker while still honoring the roots of traditional knowledge.

 

Every knife produced at Tamjaifun Knife Workshop is made with great care, from the selection of steel, forging, hardening, and sharpening, to the crafting of the handle. Each stage requires considerable skill and experience from the maker in order to produce a knife that is sharp, durable, and well balanced in use.

 

The products of Tamjaifun Knife Workshop come in many forms, ranging from traditional local knives such as waist knives and betel-cutting knives, to kitchen knives, outdoor knives, and collectible knives designed with great elegance. Some knives are created as works of art that reflect the identity of the craftsman, making them not just tools, but valuable examples of artisanal craftsmanship.

 

Another distinctive feature of Tamjaifun Knife Workshop is the stamped symbol of a “topknot child” on its knives. This symbol is connected to Bang Sadet Subdistrict in Pa Mok District. The topknot child is an emblem of the area’s traditional handicrafts, especially the famous court-style dolls. Chang Jo uses this symbol to tell the story of the knives’ origin and to connect craftsmanship with local culture.

 

Tamjaifun Knife Workshop also offers those who are interested the chance to learn knife making through a 3-day short course. Participants learn the basics of making a knife, from forging steel and shaping the blade to hardening, sharpening, and fitting the handle. At the end of the course, each student receives one knife they made themselves, along with another knife made by Chang Jo as a keepsake.
