Klai Kangwon Palace is an important seaside royal palace in Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. It was built during the reign of King Prajadhipok, Rama VII, as a private seaside retreat and was bestowed upon Queen Rambai Barni. This palace is significant in terms of history, architecture, and the development of Hua Hin into one of Thailand’s leading seaside resort towns. Klai Kangwon Palace, one of the notable attractions in Prachuap Khiri Khan, is located in Hua Hin Subdistrict, Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. It is a well-known attraction in Hua Hin with a history spanning more than 80 years. Originally, it was built as the private royal residence of King Prajadhipok, Rama VII. The King graciously ordered that his personal funds from the Privy Purse be used to construct this palace as a royal gift to Queen Rambai Barni. The design and construction supervision were under the direction of Mom Chao Itthithepsan Kritakara, who at that time served as Director of the Fine Arts Division.

The palace consists of 4 main residence buildings facing the sea. Piam Suk Residence is a two-story Spanish-style building with a tall tower. It served as the principal residence of King Prajadhipok and Queen Rambai Barni. Phra Tamnak Noi, or the Small Residence, was built as a residence for Prince Svasti Sobhana and Princess Aporn Phan, the father and mother of Queen Rambai Barni, and in the past it was also used as a residence of Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother.

 

Pluk Kasem Residence features modern Thai-applied architecture designed to be airy and comfortable, suitable for Hua Hin’s hot and humid seaside climate. It includes several bedrooms at the rear, along with bathrooms and toilets on the ground floor, which was considered a modern design for its time. Meanwhile, Eurb Prem and Aem Pri Residences are twin single-story seaside bungalow-style buildings created specifically for seaside relaxation. Their construction style and room arrangement are very similar, and they were used as holiday residences for several members of the royal family.

 

The history of Klai Kangwon Palace began in 1926 and was completed in 1929, taking a total of 3 years to build. The name “Klai Kangwon” was bestowed by King Rama VII and means “a garden far from worries.” The palace buildings feature Spanish architectural structures adapted to suit Thailand’s tropical climate. The palace is not particularly large, and its atmosphere is intimate and welcoming, making it more suitable as a seaside retreat than as a grand, formal palace in the traditional court style.

 

In front of each residence, decorative features include lanterns, nautical equipment, carved stone sculptures, and antique sundials. The area is also surrounded by Western-style gardens beautifully arranged with trees and flowers, showing the designer’s careful attention to detail. In addition, the palace grounds once included a shell museum displaying a variety of seashells, reflecting both leisure and natural learning in one place.

 

Klai Kangwon Palace is therefore regarded as a place of peace and an enduring symbol of the bond between the monarchy and the people. In later periods, it also served as a royal summer residence for Thai monarchs and various members of the royal family, making it significant in terms of history, governance, and shared national memory.

Once in Hua Hin town, continue north along Phetkasem Road, where the palace is clearly located.

 

Travelers using public buses can depart from Sai Tai Mai Southern Bus Terminal to Hua Hin, then continue by local songthaew or taxi to the palace. Those who choose to travel by train can get off at Hua Hin Railway Station and take local transport to Klai Kangwon Palace. The distance from Hua Hin Railway Station to the palace is not very far, making it suitable for travelers who want a convenient trip while also enjoying the atmosphere of Hua Hin along the way.
