The structure of the shrine takes the form of a four-gabled pavilion crowned by a 9-tiered prang tower in the Siamese Lopburi artistic style, giving the shrine an especially graceful and majestic appearance.

The pediments are adorned with beautiful motifs, including the emblem of Rahu swallowing the moon and various deities carved with great craftsmanship. The shrine is also enclosed by two layers of crystal-like walls, which further enhance the solemnity and sacred atmosphere of the site.

 

The city pillar of Prachuap Khiri Khan is known as “Jatu Chok,” and it is especially distinctive among city pillars. It is made from takian wood, which is traditionally believed to be sacred and spiritually powerful in Thai culture. For this reason, it was chosen to form the city pillar as the symbolic foundation of the province.

 

The form of Jatu Chok differs from that of many other city pillars, as it is carved with 4 heads and 4 faces in the Srivijaya artistic style. This form symbolizes compassion, wisdom, and success in every direction. The presence of 4 faces also signifies protection over the city from all 4 directions, leading people to believe that the city will remain secure and stable.

 

Jatu Chok is further enhanced through elegant decoration with lacquer, gold leaf, and gemstones, making it appear even more striking and sacred. Those who come to pay their respects often feel the peace and spiritual power of the place.

 

Inside the city pillar shrine, important deities from Brahmanical-Hindu belief are also enshrined, including Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, along with a Buddha image enshrined on the highest level of the prang tower. The Prachuap Khiri Khan City Pillar Shrine began construction during the tenure of Police Lieutenant Colonel Amnuay Thayanon as provincial governor. The foundation stone ceremony took place on March 4, 1993, which was regarded as an important day for the province. The construction of the shrine received support and cooperation from both the public sector and local residents, who joined together to create this sacred place.

 

Later, on August 20, 1994, His Majesty the King graciously assigned His Royal Highness the Crown Prince to preside over the official opening ceremony of the Prachuap Khiri Khan City Pillar Shrine, an event considered a great honor for the people of the province.

 

After its opening, the shrine became a spiritual center for the people of the province. Many visitors come here to pay respect before beginning important new chapters in life, such as starting a new job, undertaking a long journey, or opening a business, in order to pray for success.
