Wat Huay Mongkol is one of the most famous temples in Hua Hin District, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, and an important destination for merit-making travelers who come to pay respect to the largest Luang Pho Thuat statue in the world. His Majesty the King then graciously bestowed the new name Wat Huay Mongkol, a name that clearly reflects prosperity and auspiciousness in the area. Since then, Wat Huay Mongkol has continued to develop and has become an important center of faith for Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

 

The most outstanding feature of Wat Huay Mongkol is the enormous statue of Luang Pho Thuat, which has been recognized as the largest in the world. Luang Pho Thuat is a revered monk whom Thai people deeply respect, especially because of the belief in his sacred power to provide protection, help people avoid danger, and give strength of mind to those who have faith in him. The project to create this giant Luang Pho Thuat statue was born through the cooperation of many groups, including monks, community leaders, government agencies, and the private sector. Phra Phisan Sitthikhun, or Than Chao Khun Phairoj Paphatsaro, the abbot of Wat Huay Mongkol, played a major role in turning the project into reality, together with support from General Wiset Khonguthaikun, then Deputy Lord Chamberlain. The purpose of the construction was not only to create a major sacred monument, but also to dedicate merit to the monarchy and help preserve Buddhism for the future.

 

The significance of this project became even clearer when Her Majesty Queen Sirikit the Queen Mother graciously presided over the bronze-casting ceremony of the giant Luang Pho Thuat statue on August 27, 2004, and granted permission for her royal monogram S.K. to be enshrined at the front of the statue. This gave Wat Huay Mongkol importance not only in religious terms, but also in contemporary historical terms, because it is not only a center of faith for the public, but also a place that clearly reflects the relationship among Buddhism, the monarchy, and Thai society in the modern era.

 

The giant Luang Pho Thuat statue has a lap width of 9.9 meters and a height of 11.5 meters, and it sits on a three-tiered base. The lowest level of the base measures 70 meters by 70 meters. Many people believe that golden takian wood is sacred and inhabited by a guardian tree spirit, and when it is used to create a sacred image of Luang Pho Thuat, it becomes even more powerful and spiritually significant. Those traveling from Bangkok can take Phetkasem Road south to Hua Hin and then continue onto Hua Hin–Huay Mongkol Road without much difficulty. This makes the temple one of the best half-day destinations in Hua Hin.

 

Getting There From Hua Hin town, take Hua Hin–Huay Mongkol Road for about 10 kilometers, then turn right onto Huay Mongkol Road and continue for about 3 kilometers. The temple will be on the right-hand side. Visitors traveling by private car or motorcycle can reach it easily, and the temple has a large parking area that can accommodate many visitors. Those without private transport can also hire a car or use local transport from Hua Hin town.

 

In terms of facilities, Wat Huay Mongkol is well equipped to welcome tourists. There is a large parking area, food and drink stalls, resting areas, restrooms, and paths for walking around the temple grounds.
