Wat Phleng is an abandoned ancient temple located in Bang Khanun Subdistrict, Bang Kruai District, Nonthaburi Province, along the canal near Wat Sak Yai. Visitors can access the site through Wat Sak Yai. Although now in ruins, the temple remains an important historical and architectural landmark reflecting its former significance.

The temple dates back to the late Ayutthaya period, with architectural elements and stucco designs indicating construction during the reign of King Narai the Great. It once served as a key religious and community center in the riverside area.

During the fall of Ayutthaya, the Nonthaburi area became a strategic military route for Burmese troops led by General Maha Nawrahta. The resulting conflict caused local residents to flee, leading to the abandonment of the temple.

According to local oral history, the temple was originally called “Wat Thong Phleng.” A well-known saying describes its prosperity: it received Kathina offerings twice a year—once from Ayutthaya and once from local communities—an uncommon privilege for temples at that time.

The main structure is a large ordination hall featuring a six-bay layout with traditional Thai architectural elements. Decorative stucco and traces of mural paintings remain visible despite heavy deterioration.

Today, the roof has collapsed, leaving only the walls. Large banyan trees have grown over the structure, with roots stabilizing the remaining walls and creating a unique atmosphere resembling an ancient ruin.

Inside the hall stands Luang Pho To, a Buddha image in Mara-Vijaya posture made from red sandstone and coated with lacquer and gold leaf. The style reflects the U-Thong period and continues to hold spiritual significance for local communities.

Getting There The temple can be reached via Wat Sak Yai in Bang Kruai District. From Bangkok, travel takes approximately 30–45 minutes. Visitors should walk from Wat Sak Yai to access the abandoned site.
