Masjid Tha It in Nonthaburi is one of the most historically important Muslim religious sites along the Chao Phraya River in Tha It Subdistrict, Pak Kret District. According to the community history, during the reign of King Rama I, a number of Thai Muslims from the southern border region migrated toward areas near the capital and settled in several places around Bangkok and central Siam. Among the largest and most clearly established communities was the Muslim settlement at Ban Tha It on the bank of the Chao Phraya River in Nonthaburi.

 

The community leader in the early period was To Kiwangkama, who later received royal appointment as Nai Kong Wangkama. His role was to oversee and support Thai Muslims in Nonthaburi, and he was also granted rice fields for cultivation and livelihood. This royal connection shows that the Tha It Muslim community was recognized as an organized local community with a formal role in the wider structure of the kingdom.

 

Nai Kong Wangkama’s responsibilities extended beyond symbolic leadership. He helped support livelihoods, managed local welfare, and organized the community in a way comparable to a local administrative leader. After receiving the royal land grant, he distributed the land fairly among community households. Once settlement became stable, the residents worked together to build the first Tha It mosque.

 

The earliest mosque was a small wooden structure in the balai style and could accommodate around 30 worshippers at a time. Even though the building was modest in size, it was highly important as the first spiritual center of the community and as the place where religious life, education, and social unity began to take institutional form.

 

After the death of Nai Kong Wangkama, leadership passed to Luang Sama-ae, who continued to care for the Muslim community of Tha It. He later became the key figure in rebuilding the mosque on the royal land so that it could serve a growing population. Under his initiative, Tha It Mosque developed into a more prominent and dignified riverside mosque, helping shape the identity of the community for future generations.

 

As the community expanded, the mosque became more than a place of prayer. It turned into the central institution of the Tha It Muslim settlement, linking religion, education, and communal life. Its continued presence by the river helped preserve the memory of the early Muslim settlers and their descendants, making it one of the most important cultural landmarks in Tha It.

 

Another important dimension of the mosque is its educational role. Tha It has long been associated with Islamic teaching for children and youth. The existence of religious education within the community means that the mosque has functioned not only as a spiritual center, but also as a place where belief, ethics, language, and local identity have been passed from one generation to the next.

 

In terms of local history, Masjid Tha It stands as a clear example of how a Thai Muslim community in central Thailand adapted and prospered over time. From migration and land settlement to leadership, farming, mosque building, and education, the mosque reflects a complete social history rather than just the history of a single religious building.

 

Today, the mosque remains active and continues to appear in public community activities. This confirms that it is still a living center of Muslim life in Tha It, not merely a historical reference point. Its atmosphere combines the memory of an old riverside settlement with the reality of a contemporary, functioning religious community.
