Wat Bang Khwang is an ancient temple located at 238 Moo 4, Suan Yai Subdistrict, Mueang Nonthaburi District, Nonthaburi Province. The temple was originally known as “Wat Bang Yang” and is situated at the end of Khlong Bang Si Thong, a historic canal that has long been an important part of the local community. The temple reflects the traditional riverside way of life and has served as a spiritual center for the community for generations.

 

Within the temple grounds stands an ancient vihara that is more than 100 years old. The structure features a simple yet elegant design in traditional Thai architectural style, demonstrating the craftsmanship and durability of artisans from the past. The ordination hall (ubosot) retains its original ancient form, with a low rear veranda that is characteristic of older temple architecture. Inside, the principal Buddha image is a royal-attired Buddha, commonly referred to as the “Subduing Thao Maha Chomphu” posture, accompanied by the left and right chief disciples. This unique form reflects the artistic traditions and religious beliefs of the period in which it was created.

 

Another highlight inside the ubosot is the mural paintings depicting sacred relics (Phra That). These murals collectively illustrate important relic sites across Thailand, bringing them together in one place. Beyond their artistic beauty, the paintings hold significant historical and religious value, representing devotion and the spread of Buddhism throughout different regions of the country.

 

The temple also features a sermon hall (sala kan parian), an adapted traditional structure built entirely from teak wood. The building showcases fine craftsmanship and structural strength, while maintaining the aesthetic beauty of classic Thai wooden architecture. It has long served as a central space for religious and community activities.

 

An especially unique aspect of Wat Bang Khwang is its entrance and exit, which are often described as mysterious and spiritually significant. There is a belief that only those with merit can truly access or appreciate this space. This reflects the deep-rooted cultural and spiritual beliefs of the local community. Despite its historical importance, the temple remains relatively unknown, as many people are more familiar with the nearby Bang Khwang Prison than the temple itself.

 

The surrounding atmosphere of the temple is calm and shaded, making it suitable for merit-making, meditation, and appreciating traditional Thai art. Visitors can experience a sense of tranquility and cultural richness that has been preserved over time.
