Huai Ongkot Royal Development Project is a watershed development initiative established under a royal initiative, holding significant importance in terms of ecological restoration, community-based economy, and sustainable development learning. The project is located in Somdet Charoen Subdistrict, Nong Prue District, Kanchanaburi Province. Covering an area of more than 20,000 rai, it encompasses the Ongkot watershed, which in the past suffered from land degradation, water scarcity, and forest deterioration. These issues directly affected the livelihood security of local communities. The project was therefore designed as a comprehensive model for natural resource rehabilitation, alongside improving quality of life through the principles of self-reliance and responsible resource utilization.

 

The core principle of the Huai Ongkot Project lies in integrated watershed management, beginning with soil and water conservation, forest restoration, and land-use planning aligned with local geo-social conditions, and extending to livelihood promotion that matches the area’s natural potential. This approach has helped reduce soil erosion, enhance natural resource fertility, and establish a stable local food production system that supports long-term community sustainability.

 

In terms of livelihood development, the project promotes agricultural activities that are well suited to the local environment, such as forest plantation to expand green areas and generate long-term income, fish farming in systematically managed water resources, household-scale egg-laying chicken farming, and pesticide-free vegetable cultivation for both consumption and local distribution. These initiatives not only help reduce household expenses but also strengthen community knowledge in sustainable agriculture practices.

 

The Huai Ongkot Project also holds archaeological and historical significance. Discoveries of ancient sites and prehistoric tools within the Ongkot watershed indicate that this area was once an early human settlement. Some of these artifacts are currently preserved and displayed at Prachamongkhon School, serving as a local learning resource for history and archaeology. Visitors are advised to make prior arrangements for educational visits.

 

From a tourism perspective, the Huai Ongkot Project is well suited for educational and study-based tourism. Visitors can observe practical examples of nature-aligned resource management, gain insights into the relationship between watershed ecosystems and community livelihoods, and understand development concepts that emphasize moderation and sustainability rather than quantitative expansion.

 

Getting There Travelers driving from Kanchanaburi city should take the Kanchanaburi–Nong Prue–Dan Chang route (Highway No. 3086) for approximately 71 kilometers. Then turn right onto Highway No. 3480 and continue for about 20 kilometers to reach the project area. The route is mostly paved and in good condition, making it accessible year-round.
