Wat Tham Khao Chakan in Sa Kaeo Province is a Mahayana Buddhist temple nestled among the limestone mountains of Khao Chakan District. Covering an area of about 28 rai (approximately 4.5 hectares), the temple offers a serene atmosphere surrounded by dramatic cliffs and natural formations. A concrete staircase leads visitors up to the mountaintop viewpoint, where they can enjoy sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It serves both as a peaceful place for meditation and as one of Sa Kaeo’s most scenic attractions.

 

The main structures include a reinforced concrete ordination hall built in 1990 (B.E. 2533) and monks’ quarters constructed in a half-concrete, half-wooden style typical of rural Thai architecture. Scattered around the mountain are as many as 72 caves, each with its own natural charm. Popular ones include the Dark Cave, Hanuman Cave, Thalu Cave, Maha Hing Cave, Nam Thip Cave, and Kaew Phlai Chumphon Cave. Visitors can admire stalactites, cool airflow passages, and spacious caverns shaped by nature over centuries.

 

One of the most sacred spots is the replica of the Buddha’s footprint located inside Thalu Cave. Many visitors hike up to pay their respects and make merit before enjoying the panoramic view from above. The lower area around the mountain is shaded by trees, making it a comfortable spot to rest, take photos, and observe small wildlife in the surrounding forest.

 

Being a Mahayana temple, the religious symbols and decorations at Wat Tham Khao Chakan reflect a deep reverence toward both the Buddha and the Bodhisattvas. Simple shrines blend seamlessly with the natural rock formations, creating a sense of harmony between spirituality and nature. Walking through the temple feels like wandering inside a “natural cathedral” where faith meets the mountain itself.

 

Getting There: From Sa Kaeo city, take Highway No. 317 (Sa Kaeo–Chanthaburi) toward Khao Chakan District, a distance of about 25–30 km. Follow the local signs to the temple entrance, where a parking area is available at the mountain base. For those traveling by public transport, take a minibus or bus from Sa Kaeo to Khao Chakan, then hire a motorcycle taxi to reach the temple easily. Visitors are advised to bring water, a hat, and good walking shoes for climbing the stairs to the viewpoint.

 

The best times to climb are early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler. Midday light provides clear views, while evening offers a beautiful sunset scene. Be cautious on wet days as the steps may be slippery after rain.
