The Mangrove Resource Development Station No. 2, also known as Thasorn Station in Chanthaburi, is one of the most remarkable eco-tourism and learning centers in Eastern Thailand. Nestled in the fertile Welu River Basin, the station covers an expansive area of over 150,000 rai, stretching across both Chanthaburi and Trat provinces. This lush mangrove ecosystem is not only a sanctuary for diverse plant and animal species but also a destination where visitors can enjoy a perfect balance of leisure, education, and nature conservation throughout the year.

The richness of the mangrove forest makes the station an ideal living habitat for various species, from mangrove trees such as Rhizophora (kongkang), Avicennia (samae), and Sonneratia (lampu), to a wide range of aquatic creatures. Visitors can engage in activities that allow them to explore and understand the interconnectedness of the mangrove ecosystem. One of the highlights is birdwatching, particularly waterfowl species that thrive in the wetlands, sand dunes, and grasslands within the area. The station has even cultivated rice paddies in open fields to provide an additional food source for both small and large birds. Binoculars and scopes are available for birdwatching enthusiasts who wish to observe these creatures up close.

Another unmissable highlight is the firefly watching experience. As night falls, thousands of fireflies illuminate the mangrove canopy, creating a breathtaking scene of natural wonder. The well-paved path through the mangrove forest makes it convenient for visitors to enjoy this enchanting activity, available between November and May from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

For those who prefer a more active experience, the station offers a cycling route of around 4 kilometers, winding through shaded mangrove trails. Breathing in the fresh air while cycling along this green corridor is both invigorating and relaxing. Meanwhile, a 1,200-meter-long nature trail provides an immersive learning experience, perfect for students and nature lovers who wish to study mangrove biodiversity, with opportunities to encounter different plant species and aquatic life along the way.

One of the most captivating experiences here is the boat trip along the Welu River. In the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set, visitors can witness flocks of Brahminy kites soaring gracefully across the sky. This awe-inspiring sight is both rare and unforgettable, offering a glimpse into the balance of life between nature and local communities. Boat trips to see the Brahminy kites are available once daily at 4:00 p.m., while firefly tours follow later in the evening.

To accommodate visitors, the station provides camping facilities with tents for rent at 300 THB per night, suitable for 2–3 people and equipped with mattresses, pillows, and sleeping bags. For those who prefer more comfort, hotels in Chanthaburi city are only a short drive away. Dining options include the well-known Thasorn Seafood Restaurant, where guests can savor freshly caught seafood such as shrimp, crabs, fish, and squid, prepared in a clean and authentic style at reasonable prices. The restaurant is set in a scenic location surrounded by pristine mangrove forests, offering both great food and refreshing air.

Getting to the station is straightforward. From Chanthaburi city, take Sukhumvit Road and drive approximately 18 kilometers, passing through Khlung District toward Khao Saming in Trat Province. The station is located between kilometer markers 374 and 375, making it easily accessible for both day trips and overnight stays.

The Mangrove Resource Development Station No. 2 in Chanthaburi is far more than just a travel destination. It is a living classroom, a place where visitors can connect with nature, learn about the value of mangrove ecosystems, and develop a deeper appreciation for environmental conservation. With its blend of scenic beauty, diverse activities, and educational opportunities, it stands as a must-visit destination for eco-tourism lovers, families, students, and travelers seeking an authentic experience in one of Thailand’s most treasured natural landscapes.
