Blessed Nicholas Bunkerd Kitbamrung was born in 1895 and was ordained as a priest in 1926. Throughout his life, he served in many areas across Thailand. He was compassionate toward the poor and consistently zealous in proclaiming the Good News.

 

During a period of political tension in Thailand, especially in connection with territorial disputes with France, misunderstandings about Christianity arose. As a result, Father Nicholas was arrested in 1941 at the age of 49 and was accused of supporting the French side during the Franco-Thai conflict.

 

Even while imprisoned, he continued to carry out his priestly mission. He preached the faith and administered baptism to as many as 68 dying prisoners. This act reflected his true faith and sacrifice, and it became one of the major reasons why he was later honored.

 

His faith and goodness were recognized internationally. On March 5, 2000, Pope John Paul II presided over the ceremony declaring him a blessed martyr at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, Italy. This was a major event for Christians in Thailand.

 

Afterward, this shrine was built in Nakhon Pathom Province as a memorial to him and as a place where the faithful could come to pay respect, pray, and remember the virtues of Blessed Nicholas Bunkerd.
