Khao Sanam Phrueang Wildlife Sanctuary, also known locally as "Khao San," is a natural tourist destination of significant ecological and recreational importance for both the residents of Kamphaeng Phet Province and general visitors. The area is renowned for its rich natural resources and biodiversity, which have been exceptionally well preserved.

The sanctuary covers approximately 101 square kilometers, or about 63,125 rai, and spans the areas of Kosumpee, Lan Dok Mai, Na Bo Kham, Song Tham, and Nakhon Chum subdistricts in Mueang District, Kamphaeng Phet Province. The terrain ranges from high plains to steep mountains, providing habitats for a wide variety of plant species, including tropical evergreen forests, mixed deciduous forests, dry dipterocarp forests, and pine forests. Rare plants such as the “two-needled pine” can be found at the higher elevations in northern Thailand.

Traveling to Khao Sanam Phrueang Wildlife Sanctuary begins from Kamphaeng Phet city, heading along National Highway 1 (Phahonyothin Road) towards Tak for approximately 29 kilometers. Around kilometers 380–381, there is a left turn onto an 8-kilometer paved road leading to the starting point of the trail to the summit.

The hiking trail up Khao San begins at the "Stone Gate," which marks the official starting point of efforts to develop Khao San–Khao Sanam Phrueang into a tourist attraction since 1984. The trail spans about 4.5 kilometers and passes through a small check dam built to slow water flow and trap sediment during heavy rains, aiding soil and water conservation. Along the way, hikers encounter open fields and green meadows on the mountaintop, offering panoramic views of Kamphaeng Phet city and the Ping River.

Beyond its natural beauty, Khao Sanam Phrueang Wildlife Sanctuary serves as an important site for ecological study, as it features various forest types at different elevations, including tropical evergreen, mixed deciduous, dry dipterocarp, and pine forests. These habitats support diverse wildlife such as serows, barking deer, wild boars, macaques, civets, and birds including drongos, pipits, and crested serpent eagles.

Visitors interested in exploring Khao Sanam Phrueang Wildlife Sanctuary can contact the sanctuary at 0-1308-0185 or visit the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation website to plan their trip and prepare accordingly.

Visiting Khao Sanam Phrueang Wildlife Sanctuary offers not only the opportunity to experience its pristine and lush nature but also supports the conservation of natural resources and promotes sustainable tourism in Kamphaeng Phet Province.
