Wat Si Khiri Suwannaram, also known as Wat Tha Din Daeng, is a highly significant temple in Khiri Mat District, Sukhothai Province. The temple was first established in 1933 and later received the royal consecration of Wisungkhamsima in 1999. Covering an area of more than 25 rai, the temple provides ample space for religious practices and local merit-making traditions. It also serves as the district’s principal temple, acting as the ecclesiastical center for Buddhist affairs and a spiritual anchor for the local community.

The temple has an interesting history, having been relocated twice before settling in its current location. Originally situated in the area known as Non Yai, the temple was later moved due to limited space that could no longer accommodate the growing community and its religious activities. Its present site is more spacious and well-suited for both religious and communal purposes, reflecting the devotion and determination of the villagers to maintain a permanent spiritual center.

The current abbot of Wat Si Khiri Suwannaram is Phra Khru Woratham Prayut, who is affectionately called “Luang Pho Durian” by the locals. In addition to serving as the ecclesiastical head monk of Si Khiri Mat Subdistrict, he is widely revered for his compassion, wisdom, and dedication to the community. Known as both a religious leader and a community developer, Luang Pho Durian has gained respect from local devotees and visitors alike, who believe in his spiritual blessings and virtuous guidance.

Architecturally, the temple showcases the charm of traditional Thai religious design, blending simplicity with elegance. The ordination hall (ubosot) stands as the main structure, adorned with a tiered roof and finely carved gables that reflect classic Thai craftsmanship. A stupa (chedi) housing relics of the Buddha is also enshrined on the temple grounds, serving as a focal point of faith for devotees. The sermon hall (sala kan parian) provides space for religious sermons, community gatherings, and annual merit-making events. The temple’s natural surroundings, shaded by large trees, create a serene atmosphere ideal for meditation and spiritual practice.

Wat Si Khiri Suwannaram is not only a place for Buddhist rituals but also a cultural hub that preserves and carries forward local traditions. Annual events and ceremonies held here include New Year alms-giving, candlelight processions on Makha Bucha, Visakha Bucha, and Asalha Bucha days, as well as merit-making ceremonies during the Buddhist Lent. Other important rites such as suep chata (life-prolonging rituals) and memorial services for ancestors are also conducted, emphasizing the temple’s role as a bridge between faith, culture, and community life.

For the younger generation, the temple serves as a moral and spiritual school where children and youth learn the values of Buddhism through participation in temple activities. This makes Wat Si Khiri Suwannaram not only a religious site but also a living cultural institution that nurtures virtue, faith, and a sense of belonging among the people.

For visitors traveling to Khiri Mat District, Wat Si Khiri Suwannaram is a must-visit destination. Its sacred atmosphere, combined with the architectural beauty and the spiritual presence of Luang Pho Durian, offers a meaningful experience. Coming here to pay respect, join religious ceremonies, and take part in community traditions provides not only blessings but also an opportunity to witness the enduring bond between Buddhism, local culture, and the way of life in rural Thailand.
