Wat Ban Thong, commonly known by local residents as “Wat Tha Lo”, is an ancient temple located along the Mae Klong River in the Tha Lo community, Kanchanaburi Province. The temple’s history dates back to approximately 1857 (2400 B.E.), and it has long served as a religious, historical, and cultural center for riverside communities in the area.

 

The original names of Wat Ban Thong, remembered through local oral tradition, are “Suwannaram” and “Wat Tha Lo”. These names reflect both auspicious meanings and the temple’s location near a riverside landing. According to stories passed down through generations, following the first fall of Ayutthaya, a wealthy family and a group of villagers fled the dangers of war. They were led by a leader named Phraya San, accompanied by his son, Luang Sanphasit, who migrated westward in search of a new place to settle.

 

The migrating group encountered a river, which has since transformed into agricultural fields belonging to the people of Tha Lo. As it was the dry season, ox carts carrying gold and other valuables were able to cross the river with ease. After crossing, the group continued their journey until reaching an area near the present location of Wat Tha Lo, where they established a permanent settlement.

 

Wat Tha Lo thus emerged as a spiritual center for people who had endured displacement and loss due to war. The temple was not merely a place for religious ceremonies, but also a source of emotional stability and shared memory for successive generations within the community.

 

The geographical setting of Wat Ban Thong is distinguished by its location along the Mae Klong River. On the western side, the temple grounds are spacious, shaded, and gently sloping toward the river. This natural landscape has made the area a popular recreational spot for local residents, who often gather here to swim and relax. The area is affectionately known as “Hat Sai Ngam Ban Tha Lo” (Tha Lo Beautiful Sand Beach).

 

The temple has established a fish conservation zone along the Mae Klong River, allowing visitors to feed the fish. This practice reflects the integration of merit-making with environmental conservation. In addition, the temple grounds include a pétanque court and open activity areas, which serve as communal spaces for gatherings, recreation, and strengthening social bonds within the community.

 

Getting There Wat Ban Thong is located within the Tha Lo community and is easily accessible by car from Kanchanaburi town. The route follows the road along the Mae Klong River, and parking is available at the temple. Visitors are advised to dress modestly and show respect while on temple grounds.
