Ban Nong Khao is an ancient community located in Nong Khao Subdistrict, Kanchanaburi Province, approximately 12 kilometers from Kanchanaburi town. The village is well known as a cultural tourism destination and a center of local wisdom, especially for its high-quality handwoven textiles produced using the traditional “kee kratuk” loom. Its most iconic product is the “Hundred-Colored Phakhao Ma,” which clearly reflects the identity, creativity, and cultural roots of the community.

 

The way of life in Ban Nong Khao remains deeply connected to an agricultural society. Traditional raised wooden Thai houses can still be found throughout the village, alongside long-preserved customs and traditions. These include rice farming, rice pounding, traditional dessert making, palm sugar production, as well as folk performances such as Phuang Malai songs and Yoei songs, which continue to play an important role in merit-making ceremonies and in welcoming visitors.

 

Historically, Ban Nong Khao has been settled for generations on fertile lowland plains, allowing the community to be largely self-sufficient in food and basic resources. The knowledge of weaving with the kee kratuk loom originally developed for household use, later evolving into a supplementary occupation and eventually becoming a cultural product that brought recognition to the community at both provincial and national levels.

 

The heart of Ban Nong Khao lies in its kee kratuk weaving tradition, which requires a high level of skill and experience. Patterns, colors, and weaving rhythms strongly express the individuality of each weaver. The “Hundred-Colored Phakhao Ma” has become a symbol of the community. Visitors can observe the weaving process, talk with local artisans, and purchase products directly from the source.
