Sang Wetchaniyasathan 4 Tambon Wat Sri Muang, located in Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province, is a sacred site that was built to represent the Four Holy Places of Buddhism, known as the Four Pilgrimage Sites. The idea was initiated by Phra Khru Udom Rattanakhun, who had personally visited and paid homage to the original sites: Lumbini in Nepal, the birthplace of the Buddha; Bodh Gaya in India, the site of enlightenment; Sarnath in India, where the Buddha delivered his first sermon; and Kushinagar in India, the place of his passing into Parinirvana.

Phra Khru Udom Rattanakhun recognized the spiritual importance of these sites and realized that many Thai Buddhists might not have the opportunity to travel abroad to worship at these revered places. With this vision, he decided to create a replica within Thailand, allowing Thai Buddhists to pay their respects, practice mindfulness, and learn more about Buddhism and the life of the Buddha without leaving the country.

The construction project took four years, beginning in 2008, with a total budget of 12 million baht, funded entirely through the faith and donations of devoted Buddhists. Today, Wat Sri Muang serves not only as a spiritual landmark but also as a cultural and educational destination where visitors can explore and understand the Buddha’s life and teachings.

The serene environment of the temple makes it an ideal place for merit-making, chanting, meditation, and studying Buddhist history. The replicas of the Four Holy Places are carefully designed to reflect their sacred significance, offering visitors a meaningful way to experience the essence of pilgrimage within Thailand.

Through the combination of devotion, vision, and cultural preservation, Wat Sri Muang has become a prominent religious site where Thai Buddhists and international visitors alike can deepen their appreciation of Buddhism and connect spiritually with the story of the Buddha’s journey.
