Sakaeo Sakwan Pond is an ancient pair of ponds considered the spiritual heart of Sakaeo city since ancient times. Located within a public park in the city center, these two natural ponds have long provided clear water throughout the year. Locals believe that the water possesses sacred power, bringing protection and good fortune to those who pay respect or use it. The two ponds were named “Sakaeo” and “Sakwan,” auspicious names that later combined to become the name of the province, “Sakaeo.”

 

Historically, Sakaeo Sakwan Pond is associated with an important event during the Thonburi period when Chao Phraya Chakri (Thong Duang)—later King Rama I, the founder of the Chakri Dynasty—was commanded to lead troops to suppress unrest in Cambodia. During the campaign, the army stopped to rest in what is now Sakaeo Province, at the site of these two ponds, where soldiers refreshed themselves and used the water to sustain the troops.

 

After achieving victory, the ponds became legendary for bringing good fortune and success in battle. This gave rise to the belief in the “sacred water of Sakaeo Sakwan,” a tradition that has been passed down for generations.

 

Later, water from these ponds was used in the royal Oath of Allegiance Ceremony (Phra Phiphat Sattaya), in which officials pledged loyalty and faithfulness to the monarch. The use of water from Sakaeo Sakwan Pond in such an esteemed ceremony symbolizes the province’s honor and the spiritual significance of the site in royal history.

 

Today, the Sakaeo Sakwan Public Park has been renovated into a peaceful, shaded recreation area. It is ideal for walking, exercising, or enjoying nature in the morning or evening. Around the ponds are paved paths for walking and cycling, with a small shrine where visitors can pay respects and make wishes for success, prosperity, and family harmony.

 

The surrounding area also serves as a community hub, hosting local events such as provincial festivals, New Year celebrations, and traditional water-related ceremonies. This reflects how Sakaeo Sakwan is not only a historical site but also a living symbol of the community’s cultural and spiritual identity.

 

Visitors to the park are greeted by tall trees shading the two ponds, whose still and clear waters mirror the sky above. Benches line the walkway, offering quiet spots for meditation or relaxation. It is a beloved place that Sakaeo residents take pride in preserving for future generations.

 

Getting There The park is easily accessible from downtown Sakaeo via Suwannasorn Road (Highway No. 33), around kilometer markers 246–247. Turn into Tessaban 2 Alley near Sakaeo Municipality Office. The drive takes only 5–10 minutes from the provincial hall. Parking and walking paths are available, and local songthaews or taxis can also reach the site conveniently.
