Wat Ratchathammaram (Wat Sila Ngu) or the official name is Wat Ratchathammaram It is an old temple on the island of Koh Samui for a long time. The reason why it is called Phra That Sila Ngu is because this temple has a chedi that contains the Buddha's relics, and on the beach there is a stone that looks like snake scales. When the tide is low, it looks like there is a snake in the sea, so the temple is called according to what it appears.
Worshiped by Koh Samui residents, Phra That Sila Ngu is an entire golden chedi set on a seafront courtyard. Reverend Father Petch Tissao was the one who initiated the creation. with Reverend Father Srithong Srichai together with Phra Dam Jai Jai (Muen Pathotherapy).
It is the construction operator to enshrine the relics at Luang Por Petch. Tisso is kept under the main Buddha image in Wat Chaeng (Moo 3, Ang Thong Subdistrict, Koh Samui District), which was obtained from a pilgrimage to Sri Lanka. The ceremony of filling the Buddha's relics was held on June 12, 1955 by Venerable Phra Atthasasisuthiphong of Chithon Temple, Phak Hai District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province.
On April 24, 1962, His Majesty the King and Her Majesty the Queen paid homage to Phra That Sila Ngu when she visited the people of Koh Samui. Koh Samui people therefore take April 24 as a tradition that has been worshiped since.
In addition to Phra That Sila Snake, a sacred place that Koh Samui people worship, this temple also has another distinctive feature. red temple Phra Ajarn Mettri Achito, the abbot said that the reason for building the Red Church Because the main equipment used is salted limestone, then smashed and crushed. before being mixed with cement which can be obtained from Koh Samui And most importantly, it can reduce costs more than bringing bricks, stones, soil, sand from the shore of Surat Thani to put on a boat before sailing through the waves to this island.
As the stone is crushed before being mixed with mortar, the color of the surface of the church is not as beautiful as it should be, so we try to mix it in red during the mixing process with mortar. resulting in a strange color until it became a red church, creating an eye-catcher for tourists.
The construction is entirely handcrafted by skilled craftsmen in each field of art. came to be responsible for sculpting patterns according to each part of the Buddha Prati, and the stones that were pounded thoroughly before mixing were all from the faith of the Yom relatives. Therefore, this red church is regarded as one of the symbols that unite the hearts of the Koh Samui people.
How to get there: Wat Sila Ngu is located along the main road 4169. It is about 1 kilometer from the Grandfather and Grandmother's rock to the south.
