Sakaeo Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center is a major freshwater aquaculture learning center in eastern Thailand. Covering over 150 rai of land in Nong Takian Bon Subdistrict, Watthana Nakhon District, Sakaeo Province, it serves as a hub for freshwater fish research, breeding development, and technology transfer to farmers and interested visitors.

 

The center houses an exhibition hall displaying over 84 species of rare freshwater fish found in Sakaeo, including rare albino Thai fish such as the white Isok barb and the white Chao-on Hin fish. Visitors can explore the biodiversity of Thailand’s freshwater ecosystems, observe fish-breeding demonstrations, and learn sustainable aquaculture techniques.

 

Established by the Department of Fisheries, the center aims to conserve and develop freshwater fish species while serving as a study and training site for students, researchers, and the general public. Experts are available to provide guidance, and group visits can experience practical demonstrations in the experimental ponds. It’s a unique destination combining learning, conservation, and eco-tourism.

 

Getting There  From downtown Sakaeo, take Highway No. 317 toward Watthana Nakhon District (about 30 km). Upon reaching Nong Takian Bon Subdistrict, look for the sign “Sakaeo Inland Fisheries Research and Development Center” on the left-hand side. The area provides ample parking and convenient access for both private cars and public buses.

 

The surrounding area offers a green, peaceful atmosphere perfect for relaxation. Educational activities include fish-feeding demonstrations, fish-feed production workshops, and hands-on sessions on breeding small freshwater species—ideal for school trips, students, or families seeking an educational experience in nature.

 

The center also plays an essential role in conserving Thailand’s endangered freshwater species. It produces quality fingerlings for release into natural water sources, helping to maintain ecological balance and promote sustainable fisheries throughout the eastern region.
