Wat Tai Ton Lan is an ancient temple located in Ban Khlong Luang, Ban Rai Lak Thong Subdistrict, Phanat Nikhom District, Chonburi Province. It holds great significance in terms of history, architecture, and local wisdom. Built in 1905 (B.E. 2448), the temple showcases exquisite craftsmanship from local artisans of that era.
The most remarkable structure within the temple is the Tripitaka Hall built over a pond, a wooden building supported by 12 pillars standing in the middle of the water. The roof is covered with traditional tiles and adorned with beautiful finials. This unique architectural design reflects the ingenuity of the past, as it was intentionally built over water to protect sacred Buddhist scriptures from termites, ants, and moisture. It is a treasured architectural heritage, embodying the refined skills and deep knowledge of the people of its time.
Besides the Tripitaka Hall, the temple features several fascinating structures. The ancient wooden sermon hall remains well-preserved, representing the historical value of the site. A pair of hong pillars (mythical swan-like birds) stand as auspicious symbols, a common feature in historic temples of Central Thailand. At the entrance to the ordination hall, there are intricately sculpted guardian giants, reflecting spiritual beliefs about protecting sacred spaces. The floor of the ordination hall is decorated with antique Chinese porcelain tiles, symbolizing cultural and trade connections in the past. Inside the hall, there are mural paintings depicting cosmological realms, believed to be the work of skilled artisans from the early Rattanakosin period, showcasing delicate artistry of high historical value.
Recognizing its cultural and historical importance, the Fine Arts Department officially registered Wat Tai Ton Lan as a national historic site, as announced in the Royal Gazette, Volume 106, Part 26, on February 14, 1989 (B.E. 2532).
To reach the temple, visitors can travel along the Phanat Nikhom–Chachoengsao route. From Wat Luang Phrommawat, turn right and continue for approximately three kilometers. The surrounding area is peaceful and shaded, making it ideal for those who wish to pay respect to sacred relics while appreciating the atmosphere of Thailand’s past.
Wat Tai Ton Lan is more than just a spiritual center for the local community. It serves as a living testament to the rich cultural heritage of Phanat Nikhom and Chonburi, offering visitors a chance to study and experience Thailand’s traditional architecture and artistry. It is a cultural tourism destination well worth preserving and passing on to future generations.
