Wat Saphan Lueak is a public temple under the Mahanikaya order, located in Thung Benja Subdistrict, Tha Mai District, Chanthaburi Province. Currently, Phra Ajarn Suthab Sumetho serves as the abbot. This temple holds significant religious value and is a cultural attraction that draws both local and international visitors who come to pay respect and seek merit.
Wat Saphan Lueak was officially established on February 25, 1993, and was granted the boundary of sacred area (Wisungkhamasima) on November 29, 1984. The first abbot was Luang Pho Prasong Chantasuwanno, who passed away in 1984. He was renowned for his compassionate practice of giving Sanghathan (monastic offerings) to help people in need. He also collected donations, totaling over 100 million baht, to construct religious structures, including the ubosot, vihara, and the large reclining Buddha.
The reclining Buddha at Wat Saphan Lueak is considered the tallest and longest in Thailand and is also recognized as one of the largest in the world. It is housed within a grand vihara adorned with murals depicting the life of the Buddha. Construction of this reclining Buddha began in 1997 and was completed in 2004. It measures 56 meters in length, corresponding to the 56 syllables of the Buddhist chant "Itipiso," and stands 16 meters high, symbolizing the 16 celestial layers. The project cost approximately 90 million baht. This reclining Buddha is associated with people born on Tuesday, who come to pay respects for blessings and spiritual merit.
In addition to the grand reclining Buddha, the temple features other important religious structures, including the ubosot, vihara, and sermon halls. These buildings display intricate Thai architecture and interior murals illustrating the Buddha’s life from his birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana. Visitors can both admire the art and gain insight into Buddhist teachings while enjoying the serene atmosphere of the temple.
Wat Saphan Lueak is not only a center for religious activities but also a cultural and educational site preserving Thai art, architecture, and traditions. The temple is maintained through cooperation between the local community and devoted followers, ensuring that its historical, religious, and cultural significance remains intact. It has become a spiritual and cultural landmark for both residents and visitors, offering a peaceful environment for reflection, worship, and appreciation of Thai heritage.
Visitors can come to Wat Saphan Lueak to pay homage to the reclining Buddha, make merit, explore Thai art and culture, and experience a tranquil atmosphere that promotes inner peace. The temple represents a harmonious blend of religious importance, artistic grandeur, and community engagement, preserving Thailand’s spiritual and cultural legacy for future generations.
