Khao Sakae Krang in Uthai Thani Province is a prominent tourist destination, significant for its historical, religious, and cultural value. It is located near the city of Uthai Thani and can be accessed via several routes. From the area in front of Wat Sangkhas Rattanakiri, visitors can climb the stairway directly to the summit. Another option is to take Highway 3220 and turn at the junction near the provincial stadium, leading up the mountain for approximately 2 kilometers. From the summit, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Uthai Thani city.
At the top of Khao Sakae Krang stands a pavilion housing a replica of the Buddha’s footprint, relocated from Wat Chantharam. The pavilion was constructed in 1905 (B.E. 2448). In front of it is a large bell, built in 1900 (B.E. 2443) by Phra Palat Jai and the local people, considered sacred. Visitors often believe that a trip to Uthai Thani is incomplete without ringing this bell.
Nearby, there is also the statue of King Rama I’s father, Somdet Phra Pathom Borom Maha Chonlakarnnath, originally named Nai Thong Dee. He served as a scholar and civil servant, holding the position of Samian Tra in the Ministry of Interior, and later as Chao Phraya Chakri Sri Ongkhrak during the Ayutthaya period. When Bangkok was established, King Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke the Great (Rama I, formerly Nai Thong Duang) posthumously honored him as Somdet Phra Chanakathadee in 1795 (B.E. 2338).
The statue is a twofold life-size bronze figure seated on a pedestal, holding a ceremonial sword in his left hand resting on his lap, while his right hand rests on his right thigh. To the right is a high ceremonial tray with no feathers, and he wears open-back sandals. A ceremonial homage is held annually on April 6, coinciding with the blooming of the Supannika (Cotton Tree) flowers, the provincial flower of Uthai Thani.
About 200 meters beyond the statue, into the forest, lies the World Survey Marker, established in 1932 (B.E. 2475) for cartographic purposes.
Visitors to Khao Sakae Krang can experience both natural beauty and historical significance. In addition to panoramic city views and paying respects at the Buddha footprint replica, tourists can learn about Somdet Phra Pathom Borom Maha Chonlakarnnath and his important role in Thai history. Visiting Khao Sakae Krang is not just a trip but also an educational experience, enriching understanding of Uthai Thani’s local culture and heritage.
The mountain is easily accessible and offers a variety of activities, including climbing for exercise, visiting the pavilion and statue, photographing the city views, and enjoying the peaceful natural surroundings. Khao Sakae Krang is suitable for visitors of all ages, whether families, friends, or those interested in history and religion.
Khao Sakae Krang remains one of Uthai Thani’s most significant attractions, combining natural beauty, historical importance, and local culture. A visit provides a memorable experience, full of learning and appreciation for the local heritage and Thai history.
