Wat Suan Hong located in Bang Pla Ma District, Suphan Buri Province, is a historical and spiritual site deeply rooted in the faith of the local community. This temple is uniquely situated with the Tha Chin River encircling it on three sides, creating a serene atmosphere ideal for spiritual practices.
The story of the temple's establishment dates back to 1836 (B.E. 2379), when a wealthy couple from Khok Kram, Nai Suan and Nang Hong, dedicated their faith to building the temple. They named it “Wat Suan Hong” in their memory. The temple was officially granted its consecrated boundary (wisungkhamsima) in 1865 (B.E. 2408), marking its importance as a religious and community hub.
When Luang Pho Pluem took the position of abbot, the temple was in a deteriorated state. Through his perseverance and devotion, he restored it to prominence. Luang Pho Pluem was highly revered by locals for his strict adherence to Vipassana meditation and his role as a teacher of Dhamma. He passed away in 2002 (B.E. 2545), yet his body remains incorrupt and is preserved in a glass coffin. Additionally, a life-sized wax statue of him is displayed in the temple.
Beyond its religious significance, Wat Suan Hong plays a vital role in preserving local traditions. Its Boat Museum showcases the community’s connection with the Tha Chin River. The highlight event is the Royal Trophy Longboat Race, held annually during the third week of November on the river in front of the temple. The competition features longboats that have triumphed in races across the country.
Wat Suan Hong serves not only as a center of faith and tradition but also as a cultural heritage site that reflects the way of life in Bang Pla Ma. It remains a place of learning and a spiritual sanctuary for the community, standing as a testament to enduring faith and cultural pride.
