Wat Nakot Luang is located in Ban Nakot Pattana, Village No. 9, Pa Tan Subdistrict, Mae Tha District, Lampang Province. It is an ancient temple with significant historical and cultural importance in Northern Thailand. The temple was founded by Kru Ba Tanachai in 1816 (B.E. 2359) and was officially granted the temple boundary marker (Wisungkhamasima) on September 2, 1937 (B.E. 2480).

 

The temple’s viharn (main assembly hall) was built on May 29, 1858 (B.E. 2401). It is a low teakwood structure designed in the traditional Lanna architectural style. The gabled roof is decorated with stucco in the form of “Haang Wan Nak Sodung” and colored glass, while the roof apex features “Chofa” and “Bai Raka” ornaments. The gable ridge is adorned with “Prasat Fueang” and has a face shaped like a lion, with a bird figure called “Yuan Yang” in between. The structure is divided by a mandop and topped with three tiered umbrellas (chatra). At the front entrance, the stair railings are decorated with statues of lion-like creatures called “Singha Naanang,” and there are two lion statues flanking the viharn.

 

Inside the temple, there is a “Phra Bot” or ceremonial cloth depicting the Vessantara Jataka, measuring 24 meters long and approximately 80 centimeters wide. This cloth features 20 painted scenes from the 13 chapters of the great Vessantara Jataka, painted with powdered pigments on woven fabric, and is about 121 years old. The original cloth has deteriorated over time, so a replica was made for public viewing and study.

 

Additionally, the temple has a pagoda (chedi) that presents a fascinating natural phenomenon: when sunlight passes through a small opening, an inverted image of the pagoda appears on a cloth inside the monk’s quarters. This naturally occurring phenomenon reflects the sacredness and wonder of Wat Nakot Luang.

 

Wat Nakot Luang is situated in Pa Tan Subdistrict, Mae Tha District, Lampang Province. Visitors can reach the temple by private car from Lampang city to Mae Tha District, then follow the signs directing to the temple.
