Wat Phra Si Iriyabot, also commonly known as Wat Phra Yuen, is one of the most important historical and religious sites in Kamphaeng Phet Province. Located not far from the city center, this temple reflects the art and culture of ancient Thailand in a clear and remarkable way. Its most distinctive feature is the arrangement of Buddha images in the "Four Postures" (Iriyabot), representing walking, sitting, standing, and reclining, each carrying profound Buddhist significance and reflecting the Buddha’s life and teachings in various forms.
Upon visiting Wat Phra Si Iriyabot, the first noticeable feature is the pond and bathing area in front of the temple, similar to those at Wat Phra Non in the same province. These water features are not only important for religious rituals but also reflect the historical planning of temples, demonstrating a well-organized system that served both monks and the community.
The temple is surrounded by walls made of upright laterite blocks on all four sides. At the front, there is a large vihara (assembly hall) raised two meters above the ground, with square laterite balusters and a beautifully carved lintel above the entrance, showcasing the craftsmanship and artistic taste of that period.
The most significant feature of Wat Phra Si Iriyabot is the four-sided mandapa, with each direction housing Buddha images in the four postures. This arrangement is not only visually impressive but also reflects Buddhist beliefs and philosophy. Each posture carries specific meanings: the standing Buddha symbolizes stability and endurance, the seated Buddha represents enlightenment and meditation, the walking Buddha indicates spreading the Dharma, and the reclining Buddha signifies parinirvana.
Today, although only the large standing Buddha remains, it still embodies the beauty and artistic style of the Sukhothai period in Kamphaeng Phet. The Buddha’s facial features, with a broad forehead and pointed chin, are characteristic of the Sukhothai-Kamphaeng Phet artistic style.
Visiting Wat Phra Si Iriyabot is not only an opportunity to learn about Thai history and art but also to experience the serene atmosphere of a well-preserved ancient temple. Visitors and cultural enthusiasts can closely explore the vihara, the mandapa, and the standing Buddha, appreciating the beauty and historical significance of the site.
The temple serves as a valuable site for those interested in Thai art, history, and Buddhism. Its architecture, the arrangement of Buddha images, the use of laterite blocks, and the surrounding environment all reflect the lifestyle and culture of ancient Thai people. The preservation of the large standing Buddha and the vihara structure helps deepen the understanding of the Sukhothai-Kamphaeng Phet artistic style, which is rare and unique today.
For travelers visiting Kamphaeng Phet, a visit to Wat Phra Si Iriyabot offers a rich experience encompassing art, history, and religion. Combined with the temple’s peaceful and serene environment, it provides visitors with a sense of relaxation and a profound appreciation for Thailand’s cultural heritage.
