The City Pillar Shrine of Ayutthaya stands as a symbol of the grandeur and foundation of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, which was once the administrative and cultural center of Siam. According to the royal chronicles of Ayutthaya, King Ramathibodi I (King U-Thong) established the Ayutthaya Kingdom on Friday, the 6th waxing moon of the 5th lunar month, in 1350 AD. This event was marked by ceremonial rituals performed by Brahmin priests to consecrate the city's center.

 

One of the key ceremonies was the establishment of the city pillar shrine. The event, rooted in Brahminical religious practices, included the selection of an auspicious time and place. Historical records indicate that the ritual took place under a Malabar almond tree, where a "right-turning conch shell" was discovered—an auspicious artifact tied to ancient rites. It is believed that the original city pillar was erected at the same time as the founding of the kingdom, but it was lost in 1767 when Ayutthaya fell.

 

In 1982, during the bicentennial celebrations of Bangkok, the province of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya initiated a project to construct a new City Pillar Shrine. This effort aimed to honor the historical significance of the site and to restore the traditional practice of blessing the city with a sacred pillar. The new shrine was built near San Phra Kan and the historic Four Execution Grounds intersection, areas linked to the original city pillar according to archaeological evidence and historical documentation.
