Wat Yang Ong Nam, affiliated with the Mahanikaya sect, is situated on a total land area of 4 rai, 3 ngan, and 72 square wah. Its boundaries are clearly defined: the northern side stretches 60 wah along a public road, the southern side is 30 wah along another public road, the eastern side extends 40 wah along the river, and the western side measures 36 wah along a public road. The temple holds land title deed No. 1397 and possesses two sacred land plots totaling 15 rai. The temple grounds are flat and low-lying, making them suitable for constructing various religious buildings for ceremonial purposes. Key structures within the temple include the ubosot (ordination hall), which is 9 meters wide and 22 meters long, built in 1983; the sermon hall, 24 meters wide and 22 meters long, built in 1982; and the vihara, 9 meters wide and 12 meters long. There are also two monks’ quarters for housing sacred objects, such as Buddha statues of various sizes and postures, reflecting the art and beliefs of the local community.
Wat Yang Ong Nam was established around 1772 and was named after the original village, Ban Yang Ong, which historically fell under the subdistrict of Yang On in the Sam Ngao minor district. It received official demarcation for religious purposes on July 3, 1985, with the sacred boundary measuring 25 meters by 50 meters. Currently, the temple has one resident monk and six novice monks. Throughout its history, 13 abbots have presided over the temple, including Phra In Ta, Phra Panya, Phra Wong, Phra Ji, Phra Chuen, Phra Chan, Phra Rad, Phra La, Phra Pia, Phra Ju, Phra Athikan Khiao, Phra Ai, and Phra Athikan Pun Thitisilo.
Wat Yang Ong Nam is not only a place for religious ceremonies but also serves as an important community center for Ban Yang Ong and neighboring villages. Religious activities such as annual merit-making, group chanting, and local traditional festivals continue to be regularly held, making the temple a symbol of the community’s way of life, beliefs, and cohesion. It also serves as a valuable site for learning about Thai history and culture. Visitors can experience a peaceful atmosphere, observe historical structures and sacred objects, and learn about the lives and leadership of the monks who have served the community over generations, making Wat Yang Ong Nam significant in terms of religion, history, and culture in Tak Province.
