Chomphon Cave is one of the best-known natural attractions in Ratchaburi Province. It is located in Chom Bueng Subdistrict, Chom Bueng District, about 30 kilometers from Ratchaburi town and only around 11 kilometers from Khao Bin Cave, another famous cave in the province. This site lies within a forest park area and the grounds of Muban Chom Bueng Rajabhat University, giving the surrounding area a shaded and peaceful atmosphere, with abundant greenery and woodland.

Chomphon Cave is a large limestone cave formed naturally over a long geological period. Inside the cave are beautiful stalactites and stalagmites in many different forms. These formations were created through geological processes over thousands of years. Some resemble curtains of stone, while others look like natural pillars, creating an interior atmosphere that is both striking and rich in natural beauty.

The entrance to Chomphon Cave is located within Muban Chom Bueng Rajabhat University. Visitors must pass through the university grounds before reaching the cave itself. A large troop of monkeys lives in this area, and they are one of the sights visitors commonly encounter. These monkeys often come out to forage along the pathways and in the shaded areas around the cave, so visitors should keep an eye on their belongings and avoid feeding them directly.

Originally, this cave was known as “Tham Muchalin”. Later, in 1895, King Chulalongkorn, Rama V, together with Queen Saovabha Phongsri, visited the cave during a royal journey. Upon seeing the remarkable beauty of the stalactites and stalagmites inside, the King was greatly impressed, especially by one particular stalactite whose elegant ridged form resembled the epaulette worn on the shoulder of a field marshal.

For this reason, His Majesty bestowed a new name upon the cave: “Chomphon Cave”. This is the name that has remained in use ever since, and the cave has become one of the important attractions of Ratchaburi, valued for its natural, historical, and cultural significance.

Inside Chomphon Cave are several large chambers connected by walkways that make exploration convenient for visitors. There is also an opening in the cave ceiling that allows natural light to shine down into the interior. This light creates a particularly beautiful atmosphere, especially when sunlight falls on the stalactites and stalagmites, producing shimmering effects that resemble natural works of art.

One of the most important highlights of Chomphon Cave is “Pha Wichit stalactite”, a formation made up of thin, delicate ridges arranged in a graceful pattern, resembling a natural stone curtain or draped fabric. Its fine and elegant appearance was so impressive that King Rama V compared it to the epaulette of a field marshal, which is also the origin of the cave’s present name.

In addition to the beauty of its rock formations, Chomphon Cave also enshrines a Reclining Buddha inside the cave. This reclining Buddha image is a sacred object of worship, and visitors as well as devotees often come here to pay respect and pray for blessings. It is regarded as an important spiritual place by local people in the area.

During the dry season each year, a celebration is held in honor of the Reclining Buddha inside Chomphon Cave. This is an important local tradition of the people of Chom Bueng. The event usually includes merit-making, chanting, and various Buddhist activities, while many people from nearby areas come to join the celebration, making the atmosphere especially lively during this period.

Beyond its religious and historical significance, Chomphon Cave is also an ideal natural destination for travelers who want to experience the beauty of a limestone cave. The air inside remains cool throughout the year, and the interior walkways are arranged for convenient access, allowing visitors to appreciate the cave’s beauty up close.

The area surrounding Chomphon Cave is also filled with trees and forest park scenery, making it a pleasant retreat for those wishing to escape the bustle of the city. Visitors can enjoy a quiet walk, admire the natural surroundings, or simply relax amid the greenery.

Getting There From Ratchaburi town, travelers can take Phetkasem Road toward Chom Bueng District, then continue on to Muban Chom Bueng Rajabhat University. Once inside the university grounds, there are clear signs directing visitors to Chomphon Cave. The distance from Ratchaburi town is about 30 kilometers, and the journey usually takes around 40 minutes.

For those traveling by private car, parking is available near the cave entrance. Visitors using public transportation can first travel to Chom Bueng District and then continue by local songthaew or hired local transport to reach Chomphon Cave.

With its natural beauty, royal historical connection, and religious importance, Chomphon Cave stands out as a distinctive attraction of Ratchaburi Province and is one of the destinations that should not be missed when visiting this part of Thailand.
