Mangrove Resource Development Station 2 in Welu River The Mangrove Resources Development Station No. 2 at Welu River Basin is one of Chanthaburi’s outstanding eco-tourism destinations, attracting nature lovers and travelers who wish to explore the richness of coastal wetlands. Located at Ban Tha Son, Bo Subdistrict, Khlung District, the station is only about 18 kilometers from downtown Chanthaburi, situated along Sukhumvit Road at kilometer markers 374–375. Covering an expansive area of approximately 120,000 rai, this mangrove forest is managed and promoted under the name “Welu Wetland,” highlighting its ecological importance and potential as a sustainable tourism site.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of activities that combine leisure with environmental education. One of the highlights is the 1,200-meter mangrove nature trail, which takes about an hour to complete. Along the boardwalk, travelers can observe a variety of mangrove species and aquatic life, while learning from the interpretive signs placed at different points along the path. Birdwatchers will find the site especially rewarding, as it is home to numerous waterbirds, including the iconic Brahminy Kite, a favorite among bird enthusiasts. For convenience, the station provides both binoculars and spotting scopes for use.
Another remarkable feature of Welu Wetland is its firefly forest, which lights up between November and June each year. As night falls, countless fireflies illuminate the mangrove trees, creating a magical atmosphere that leaves visitors mesmerized. For those who prefer more active exploration, bicycles are available for rent at just 20 baht per bike, allowing travelers to cycle along a 4-kilometer trail that winds through the lush mangroves.
Boat tours are another popular activity, offering visitors a chance to admire the scenic beauty of the Welu River and its surrounding mangroves. In the early evening, just before sunset, thousands of Brahminy Kites take to the sky in a breathtaking display that has become one of the wetland’s signature sights.
For those wishing to stay overnight, the station provides tent accommodations at 300 baht per night, suitable for 2–3 people, complete with basic amenities. Travelers who bring their own tents can rent camping space for just 50 baht per night.
Reaching the station is straightforward. From Bangkok, visitors can take a public bus on the Bangkok–Trat route, while those already in Trat can use the Trat–Saen Tung bus line and get off directly in front of the station. Welu Wetland is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, and admission is free of charge.
With its unique combination of rich biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and engaging eco-tourism activities, the Mangrove Resources Development Station No. 2, Welu Wetland, is not only a haven for travelers seeking relaxation and adventure but also an invaluable center for learning about the importance of mangrove ecosystems and the need for environmental conservation.
