Wat Thammappanyaram, commonly known by locals as "Wat Nong Ai Don," is located in Ban Nong Ai Don, Moo 7, Tonod Subdistrict, Khiri Mat District, Sukhothai Province. This Theravada Buddhist temple is under the Mahanikaya monastic order and has played a significant role in provincial-level Sangha administration. In the past, it served as the residence of the former provincial ecclesiastical head and revered Buddhist monks in the area. The temple was established through the collective effort of the local community, reflecting both spiritual dedication and cultural significance for Ban Nong Ai Don.
The Ministry of Education officially recognized the establishment of the temple on August 21, 1975. The construction of the temple was made possible through the cooperation of local residents and coordination with government authorities, with Mr. Yuean Khlangmuang handling the official administrative processes for the temple’s establishment. The temple occupies a total area of 28 rai, 1 ngan, and 25 square wah, providing ample space for the construction of the ordination hall, vihara, sermon hall, monk residences, and other structures necessary for religious and community activities.
Since its founding, Wat Thammappanyaram has been led by a succession of abbots who have overseen its development and spiritual activities. The first abbot, Phra Mongkolsunthorn (Thom Klayano), served from 1976 to 2004, during which the temple’s infrastructure and religious activities were significantly developed. Following him, Phra Kru Anuchitthammaphith (Yuean) was appointed abbot in 2004 and continues to serve in this role. Under his guidance, the temple has preserved its traditional character while actively promoting Buddhist practices, education, and community engagement.
Wat Thammappanyaram serves as a central hub for spirituality and culture in the community. Religious activities, including merit-making ceremonies, chanting, and annual Buddhist festivals, strengthen both faith and local traditions. The temple also functions as a place of learning and spiritual refuge for people of all ages, from children and youth to the elderly. Its presence contributes not only as a religious institution but also as a focal point for social gatherings and community life.
The temple grounds are spacious, featuring the ordination hall, vihara, sermon hall, and monks’ quarters, reflecting the community’s dedication to creating a comprehensive space for both religious and social purposes. The grounds also include landscaped gardens and activity areas, providing visitors with a tranquil environment for spiritual reflection and leisure. Wat Thammappanyaram is also a destination for tourists and those interested in studying Buddhism and local culture, offering an authentic glimpse into the spiritual and daily life of the community.
With its long history and the stewardship of successive abbots, Wat Thammappanyaram stands as a symbol of cooperation between the community and religion. It serves as both a spiritual learning center and a cultural hub of local heritage. Through its religious activities, cultural preservation, and fostering of community bonds, the temple continues to play a vital role in the lives of the residents of Ban Nong Ai Don and visitors to Sukhothai Province.
