Tham Krasae Cave is located in Lum Sum Subdistrict, Sai Yok District, Kanchanaburi. It is a limestone cave that is relatively open and not very deep, with a distinctive character that sets it apart from most tourist caves. The cave is situated directly beside the Kanchanaburi–Nam Tok Railway, widely known as the “Death Railway.” Inside the cave stands a sacred Buddha image revered by local residents as “Luang Pho Tham Krasae.” From the cave entrance, visitors can clearly see the railway track curving along the cliff face, with the Khwae Noi River flowing far below, making this one of the most beautiful yet most breathtaking viewpoints along this historic railway line.

 

Tham Krasae is not only a scenic tourist attraction but also a site of deep historical significance. During World War II, this cave was used as a shelter by prisoners of war who were forced to work on the construction of the Thai–Burma Railway. The terrain in this area consists of steep limestone cliffs following a sharp curve, with the Khwae Noi River below, making this section of railway construction one of the most difficult, dangerous, and deadly. Standing here today is therefore not just about enjoying the view, but about standing on ground filled with stories of human endurance, suffering, and loss in world history.

 

Inside the cave, the atmosphere is calm, airy, and naturally lit by sunlight entering from the cave mouth, which makes Tham Krasae very different from deep, dark caves. The Buddha image, Luang Pho Tham Krasae, serves as a spiritual anchor for local people and travelers alike. It is believed that in the past, this place provided mental and spiritual support for those working under extremely harsh and dangerous conditions. Paying respect here today should therefore be done with mindfulness and an awareness of the site’s historical background.

 

From the cave entrance, looking outward toward the railway, visitors will see the track dramatically curving along the limestone cliff. Trains pass only a few meters above the Khwae Noi River, creating an iconic image that has become a symbol of both Tham Krasae Cave and the Death Railway in the eyes of travelers from around the world. The combination of natural beauty and historical memory gives this place a powerful presence that is difficult to describe, and it explains why so many people choose to visit despite the need for extra caution.

 

Getting There Tham Krasae Cave is located along the Sai Yok–Thong Pha Phum route, at approximately kilometer marker 20. It can be reached by both private vehicle and train. By car, visitors can drive along the main road in Sai Yok District, with parking available near the cave area. By train, the State Railway of Thailand operates daily services on the Kanchanaburi–Nam Tok line. The distance from Kanchanaburi Station to Nam Tok Station is approximately 77 kilometers, and passengers can disembark at Tham Krasae Station or a nearby stop, then walk a short distance to the cave.

 

Because the cave is directly adjacent to the railway track, visitors must exercise extreme caution. Walking on the tracks or standing in hazardous areas for photographs should be avoided. Always observe warning signs and remain alert to approaching trains to ensure a safe and respectful visit to this important historical site.
