Wat Phra That Kaeng Soi is one of the oldest and most historically significant temples in Tak Province. It is located along the Ping River, within the area by the Bhumibol Dam in Sam Ngao District, Tak. This area was once part of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, surrounded by mountains and rich natural landscapes.
The only way to reach Wat Phra That Kaeng Soi is by water, traveling by boat along the Ping River, as no land routes are accessible. This makes the temple uniquely charming and tranquil, ideal for those who wish to experience the atmosphere of a forest temple steeped in history and faith.
The temple is linked to legends and royal history, with several monarchs said to have traveled along the Ping River past this area—most notably Queen Cham Thewi, a heroic ruler of the Lanna Kingdom. She played a key role in spreading Buddhism and restoring this temple more than 1,000 years ago. Records also mention the last king of the city of Kaeng Soi, “Phaya Patumma Ratcha,” who developed the city and renovated as many as 99 temples in the Sroi region, reflecting the city’s former prosperity in Buddhism and its historical importance.
In modern times, Wat Phra That Kaeng Soi underwent a major restoration in 1924 (BE 2467) led by Khruba Chao Siwichai Siriwichayo, the revered monk-saint of Lanna. He restored the principal stupa and temple grounds, bringing them back to their former glory. Later, as the structure deteriorated over time, in 1994 (BE 2537), Khruba Chao Chaiyawongsa Phatthana Jantawongso a spiritual successor to Khruba Siwichai undertook another major restoration, strengthening and beautifying the stupa and chedi to the state in which they stand today.
Today, Wat Phra That Kaeng Soi remains a significant destination for devotees and travelers wishing to admire a temple set amid the natural beauty of the Ping River. The boat journey via the Bhumibol Dam to the temple is a rare and memorable experience—not only for the panoramic views of the water and the rolling mountains, but also for the serene, sacred atmosphere that has been preserved for over a thousand years.
With its long history, royal and monastic heritage, and breathtaking natural surroundings, Wat Phra That Kaeng Soi is both a cultural landmark and a revered religious site of Sam Ngao District, Tak Province. It is truly a place worth visiting to pay homage, while learning about the traditions and deep-rooted beliefs of the communities along the Ping River.
