Pha Wang Daeng Cave in Phitsanulok Province is one of the most remarkable natural caves, notable for its biodiversity and geological features. It is a large and extremely long cave, measuring approximately 12.5 kilometers, making it one of the longest caves in Northern Thailand. The cave system is interconnected with multiple chambers, forming a complex network that showcases the natural beauty of the area. Inside the cave, there are spacious halls with high ceilings that convey a sense of grandeur and wonder. Visitors can admire the stunning stalactites and stalagmites, each with unique shapes and colors. Some formations resemble pillars, others look like layered cakes or flowers, allowing visitors to experience the cave’s natural artistry up close.

A small stream flows through the cave, adding another layer of interest. This stream supports a rare and unique aquatic ecosystem. One particularly special species found here is the Pha Wang Daeng cave fish, locally known as the “blind fish.” These fish have adapted over generations to live in the dark cave environment, where light is minimal, resulting in non-functional eyes. The Pha Wang Daeng cave fish grows to about 15 centimeters in length, has a hunched back, thick lips, and small fleshy protrusions on the front. Although its eyes are non-functional, faint eye markings remain. Its body is pinkish-yellow, making it a fascinating species to observe. Another species found here is the cave pla-pluang, also called the blind catfish. It differs from other pla-pluang species, with very small eyes covered by thin skin, thick lips, and two pairs of barbels. Its back is curved, scales are thin, and its body coloration is a light pink mixed with pale gray. It can grow up to 40 centimeters long, offering a rare opportunity for biologists and enthusiasts to study evolutionary adaptations in a unique cave environment.

Visiting Pha Wang Daeng Cave requires careful planning due to its length and complexity. To avoid accidents or getting lost, visitors should contact the rangers at Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, especially at ranger station 5. Park staff provide guidance on safe routes and advice on necessary equipment, such as flashlights, suitable footwear, and comfortable clothing that protects against moisture. Guided tours also allow visitors to learn about the cave’s history and the unique wildlife living within.

Pha Wang Daeng Cave is not only a beautiful natural attraction but also an important site for scientific research. Researchers study the adaptations of aquatic animals in low-light, low-oxygen environments, as well as physical and behavioral changes in cave-dwelling fish. The cave serves as an excellent example of a complete and complex subterranean ecosystem. Conservation of Pha Wang Daeng Cave is crucial for maintaining biodiversity and supporting scientific studies.

Tourists can enjoy a cool and tranquil atmosphere inside the cave while admiring the stunning stalactites, stalagmites, and rare aquatic species. Photography is popular here, as each rock formation has unique shapes and colors. Visitors can also gain knowledge about the cave’s biology and natural history through explanations provided by park staff, making the experience both enjoyable and educational.

Due to the cave’s length and biodiversity, Pha Wang Daeng Cave is ideal for adventure seekers, nature enthusiasts, and those interested in studying rare cave-dwelling species. Proper planning, following ranger instructions, and bringing appropriate equipment will ensure a safe and memorable visit. The uniqueness of the Pha Wang Daeng cave fish and the blind catfish makes this cave an important learning site for researchers and tourists interested in biology and subterranean ecosystems.

For anyone wishing to witness the wonders of nature and rare aquatic species, and to explore one of Northern Thailand’s longest and largest caves, a visit to Pha Wang Daeng Cave offers an exciting and educational experience that combines adventure with natural knowledge.
