Wat Klang is located in Nakhon Thai Subdistrict, Nakhon Thai District, Phitsanulok Province. It is a local temple under the Mahanikaya order. Also known as Wat Klang Sriphuttharam or Wat Klang Nakhon Thai, this temple is one of the most historically significant landmarks in Nakhon Thai, which was formerly known as Bang Yang. It was established during the reign of Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao, also known as Pho Khun Sri Inthrathit, the first king of the Sukhothai Kingdom. According to the National Office of Buddhism, Wat Klang was founded in 1344 BE (1887) and received the royal consecration of Wisungkhamasima in 1857 BE (2400), reflecting its religious and historical importance.

The old ordination hall (Ubosot) of Wat Klang was built during the time of Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao, distinguished by its red sandstone boundary markers (Bai Sema). Although the hall has been renovated for modern use, it still preserves its ancient beauty and sacredness. Wat Klang houses several important religious artifacts that highlight Thai art and culture. Notably, there were three large Buddha images: a Sukhothai-style bronze Buddha with a 53-centimeter-wide lap and a height of 68 centimeters, and two Lopburi-style Naga-protected Buddha images in meditation posture. One of the Lopburi-style images was completed but partially damaged, measuring 65 centimeters across the lap and 177 centimeters in height, while the other remains in an unfinished state. These images, dating from the 18th–19th Buddhist centuries, reflect local artistic traditions rather than imported works. Currently, the Sukhothai bronze Buddha and the complete Lopburi-style Naga Buddha have been stolen.

In addition to the Buddha images, the temple features a monument of Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao and a sacred white champa tree over 700 years old, planted before 1806 BE. Legend has it that Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao planted this tree before going to battle the Khmer forces to reclaim Sukhothai and vowed that if he succeeded, the tree would thrive and bloom white flowers. Today, the tree’s trunk circumference is about three meters, with a height of approximately 9–10 meters. Although it has weathered over time, it remains a symbol of faith and historical prosperity.

Wat Klang Nakhon Thai is not only a place for religious ceremonies but also an important site for learning about Thai history, art, and culture. It is ideal for visitors interested in exploring the history of Nakhon Thai and the Sukhothai period, as well as for those seeking a peaceful and sacred atmosphere in an ancient temple that preserves cultural and historical heritage.

The ordination hall and other structures at Wat Klang showcase Sukhothai and Lopburi artistic styles, reflecting the era of Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao and the development of local religious practices. Efforts to preserve and restore the temple allow new generations to appreciate and learn from Thailand’s heritage, making Wat Klang not only a sacred place but also a center of knowledge, faith, and cultural pride for the people of Nakhon Thai.

Wat Klang Nakhon Thai is therefore a significant destination for those interested in Thai history and culture. Its ancient Buddha images, sacred white champa tree, and historic structures provide religious, social, and cultural meaning. Visiting Wat Klang offers both spiritual tranquility and an invaluable cultural learning experience.
