Wat Tha Luang in Phichit Province is one of the most important temples in the area, rich in history and cultural significance. It is located on the west bank of the Nan River along Bussaba Road, near the old provincial hall. The temple was built around 1845 during the reign of King Nangklao (Rama III), reflecting the exquisite architecture and the devotion of the local people of that era. Inside the ordination hall, the principal Buddha image, Luang Pho Phet, is enshrined. This statue, cast in bronze in the Chiang Saen style, depicts the Buddha in the Mara Vichaya posture. It is highly revered for its elegance and grandeur, with a width of 1.40 meters and a height of 1.60 meters. Luang Pho Phet is considered a principal Buddha image of Phichit and is deeply respected by both locals and visitors.

The history of Luang Pho Phet is closely tied to significant historical events. The Lord of Phichit at the time desired a principal Buddha image for the city. During a military campaign when the Ayutthaya army passed through Phichit to suppress a rebellion in Chom Thong, Chiang Mai, the Lord requested that a Buddha image be brought to Phichit after the campaign was completed. Once the mission was accomplished, the general brought Luang Pho Phet on a small raft down the Ping River, temporarily leaving it in Kamphaeng Phet. Later, the statue was enshrined at the ordination hall of Wat Nakhon Chum before being moved permanently to the ordination hall of Wat Tha Luang in Phichit, where it remains today.

Wat Tha Luang is open for visitors to pay respects to Luang Pho Phet daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Visiting the temple offers more than just religious significance; it provides a chance to experience the serene riverside atmosphere, admire the ancient architecture, and explore the temple’s historical and cultural heritage. The temple is also a venue for religious ceremonies and local traditions, helping maintain the community’s cultural identity and connection to its past.

Visitors can enjoy the tranquility and scenic beauty of the Nan River and the surrounding nature. Paying respects to Luang Pho Phet allows for a deeper understanding of Phichit’s history, the journey of the Buddha image, and the devotion of the local people. Wat Tha Luang is not only a religious site but also a key cultural and historical tourist attraction in Phichit.

Planning a visit should include enough time to explore the ordination hall and the temple grounds to fully appreciate the architectural details and ancient artworks. Its proximity to the old provincial hall makes it easily accessible and a convenient stop when visiting other attractions in Phichit. Visiting Wat Tha Luang also supports local tourism and promotes the learning of Thai art and culture.
