It is widely regarded as one of Thailand’s most iconic trekking routes and is often described as a “dream summit” among adventure hikers. The appeal of Khao Chang Phueak lies not only in reaching its height, but in the experience of walking along an open ridgeline that offers uninterrupted 360-degree views across the Tenasserim mountain range. The trekking route to the summit of Khao Chang Phueak covers a total distance of approximately 8 kilometers and takes an average of about 6 hours of walking time, excluding rest breaks. An overnight stay on the summit is required, making this a true multi-day trekking experience rather than a simple day hike. The trail involves continuous ascents and descents along narrow ridges in some sections, requiring focus and balance, while other sections provide ample opportunities to stop, enjoy the scenery, and take photographs. The challenge level is demanding yet manageable for those who are physically fit and follow the guidance of park officials closely.

 

The most outstanding feature of Khao Chang Phueak is its panoramic 360-degree view, offering unobstructed vistas of mountain ranges extending as far as the eye can see. In the early morning, mist may drift through the valleys below, while in the late afternoon the setting sun casts golden light along the ridgelines, creating dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. The openness of the terrain allows cool breezes to flow throughout the day, resulting in an atmosphere that feels refreshing and distinctly different from treks through dense forest.

 

Overnight camping on the summit of Khao Chang Phueak is a highlight that many hikers consider the most memorable part of the journey. Thong Pha Phum National Park strictly manages visitor access by limiting the number of hikers to no more than 60 people per day in order to minimize environmental impact and ensure safety. All trekking groups are required to be accompanied by park rangers, with a guide fee of 900 THB per person. Porter services are also available to assist with carrying equipment, charged at 900 THB per porter. The number of porters depends on the amount of personal gear. This management approach reflects the park’s strong commitment to sustainable tourism.

 

Khao Chang Phueak is open to visitors only from October through February, when weather conditions are most suitable and safe for trekking. The route is closed during the rainy season as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents and to allow natural regeneration of the environment. Thong Pha Phum National Park is located approximately 175 kilometers from Mueang Kanchanaburi District, accessible via Highway No. 323. From Thong Pha Phum District, the park headquarters is about 30 kilometers away. The journey is convenient for travelers with private vehicles, and it is recommended to allow sufficient travel time to align with scheduled meeting times set by park officials on the trekking day.
