Sakon Nakhon City Gate and Phraya Prachantapratejthani Monument, Sakon Nakhon is an ancient town in the Northeast of Thailand. Its earliest history can be traced back to the Khmer Empire in the 11th century when it spread its power into the area.
Over time, the town was known as “Nong Harn”, “Chiang Mai Nong Harn”, “Sakontawapee” and “Sakon Nakhon”. The town is also dubbed the center of Buddhism of Isan as there are a large number of temples scattered around the province. Many revered monks were originally from here or resided here as well.
