Ping River Hot Spring (Mid-River) is a highly distinctive natural spot located in Ban Ping Khong, Village No. 13, Ping Khong Subdistrict, Chiang Dao District, Chiang Mai Province. What makes this place unique is that the hot spring does not emerge on land like most others, but instead rises directly from the middle of the Ping River itself. This creates a very different atmosphere — as if you are pausing to observe the underground geothermal forces still actively shaping the landscape, with one of Northern Thailand’s major rivers flowing as the backdrop.

 

Visitors will often notice small bubbling points on the water’s surface or unusual ripples that differ from the normal river current. Along the riverbank, there may also be a faint sulfur scent, familiar to those who have visited natural hot springs before. This characteristic is exactly what sets the site apart from conventional hot-spring pools. The main appeal here lies in walking, observing, photographing, and taking a short rest, rather than soaking in the water itself.

 

Because the hot spring emerges within the river, safety should be the top priority. Certain sections of the Ping River can have strong currents, sudden changes in depth, slippery rocks, or hidden channels that are difficult to detect visually, especially after rainfall or during high-water periods. If visiting with children or elderly companions, it is best to remain on stable riverbank areas, avoid approaching the water’s edge, and never enter zones with slippery surfaces or swirling currents.

 

The most comfortable time to visit is during the dry season through winter, when the weather is clear, paths are drier, and river water tends to be clearer and calmer. During the rainy season, although the surroundings are lush and green, risks increase due to slippery ground and rapidly rising water levels. If rain intensifies or the river appears muddy and fast-flowing, it is best to end the visit and move away from the area immediately.

 

Getting There From Chiang Mai city, take Highway 107 (Chotana Road) toward Chiang Dao and continue in the direction of Fang District. Ban Ping Khong is located along this route. Travel time will vary depending on your starting point and traffic conditions. As you approach the community, reduce speed and look for safe roadside parking areas. Night travel is not recommended for drivers unfamiliar with mountain roads.

 

For a relaxed yet worthwhile itinerary, this hot spring works well as a short stopover between destinations. From here, travelers can continue on to more developed attractions in Chiang Dao such as caves, temples, or scenic viewpoints. If Fang is your next destination, this spot also serves as an ideal rest stop to stretch, hydrate, and take photographs before continuing the journey.
