Wat Nong Khun Chat is a local Buddhist temple under the Mahanikai sect, located in Nong Suang Subdistrict, Nong Chang District, Uthai Thani Province. This temple is one of the oldest and most historically significant religious sites in the area. It was established in 1821 BE (1778 CE) by Khun Sanit, who led the local villagers of Nong Suang to construct the temple. Initially, it was named Wat Sanittham Tharam, but later it was renamed Wat Nong Suang, after the name of the village. In 1906 BE (1863 CE), the district office of Old Uthai was moved from Ban Nong Khun Chat to Ban Noen Ta Niem, and in 1922 BE (1879 CE), the district was renamed Nong Chang. At the same time, the temple’s name was changed to “Wat Nong Khun Chat” to reflect its location near Ban Nong Khun Chat. The temple first received the royal boundary marker (Wisungkhamasima) around 1900 BE (1857 CE) and was granted the marker again on November 3, 1995.
The main assembly hall (vihara) houses three sacred Buddha images: Luang Pho Suk, Luang Pho Sue, and Luang Pho Tum. In addition, there is a small stupa (mondop) that enshrines a replica of the Buddha’s footprint. The temple is also adorned with intricately carved wooden patterns on its doors and windows, reflecting the exquisite craftsmanship of the Rattanakosin period. Wat Nong Khun Chat also features a museum that preserves ancient artifacts, traditional household tools, agricultural implements, historical weapons such as bows and swords, and coin collections from different eras, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of local life and history.
Wat Nong Khun Chat remains a center of religious and cultural activities. Every year, the temple holds the Buddha Footprint Worship Festival, which takes place from the 12th day of the waxing moon in the 3rd lunar month according to the Thai calendar and lasts for ten days and ten nights. This annual festival reflects the deep faith and cultural identity of the local community.
The temple is easily accessible, located near Nong Chang Market. From Highway 3012 (Nong Chang–Thap Than), visitors turn left at the three-way intersection and continue along Highway 3013 to reach the temple.
Wat Nong Khun Chat is not only a religious site but also a cultural and historical landmark that preserves the community’s heritage. Through its museum, annual ceremonies, and traditional architecture, the temple offers visitors an opportunity to experience Thailand’s spiritual and cultural traditions while learning about the local history and lifestyle of Uthai Thani. Visiting the temple provides a sense of peace, insight into Thai Buddhist practices, and a firsthand understanding of the preservation of cultural heritage in the region.
