Phrasaeng Dap of Uthai Thani City is a historically and artistically significant ceremonial sword, regarded as one of the province’s most treasured cultural assets. It was bestowed by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) when he visited the northern cities, including Uthai Thani, in 1906. Uthai Thani received this royal sword as the third city after Ayutthaya and Chai Nat, reflecting the city’s prestige and its important historical ties with the monarchy. The royal bestowal symbolizes both honor and civic pride, representing the city’s historical and cultural significance in Thailand.

 

The Phrasaeng Dap is a traditional Thai sword made from high-quality white steel, featuring a single-edged sharp point and lightweight construction. The blade’s spine is intricately inlaid with ivory in the form of falling flowers, while both edges are decorated with gold patterns resembling curling vines. At the center of the blade’s base is an inscription that reads, “Sword for the City of Uthai Thani.” The hilt is crafted from hardwood and covered with cloisonné enamel, with the base adorned in elaborate Kanok patterns, exemplifying the sophisticated craftsmanship of the Rattanakosin era.

 

The pommel is shaped like a three-tiered inverted lotus, embellished with gemstones, while the scabbard throat is made of gold in a Rakh Roi design with gem decorations. Gold fittings shaped like curling vines and floral motifs with gemstones further enhance the scabbard’s beauty. The scabbard itself is made of gold with embossed intricate designs on both sides, representing a masterpiece of Thai artistry.

 

Recognized as an exceptional work of Rattanakosin-era craftsmanship, the Phrasaeng Dap serves as the ceremonial sword of Uthai Thani City. Today, it is preserved in the provincial treasury and is displayed to the public only during royal ceremonies.
