Wat Ratchaphruek in Sukhothai Province is an ancient temple with a long history spanning several centuries. It is considered one of the significant religious sites that reflects the deep faith and collective effort of the local people in Ban Lum Subdistrict, Mueang District, Sukhothai. The temple was originally established around 1377 A.D. (B.E. 1920) under the name “Wat Nuea” (Northern Temple). Later, around 1927 A.D. (B.E. 2470), its name was changed to “Wat Ratchaphruek,” a name regarded as more auspicious and in harmony with the times. This renaming also represents the community’s determination to enhance the temple’s identity and significance as a spiritual and cultural center.

Wat Ratchaphruek is a public temple under the Mahanikaya sect of the Thai Sangha, situated within a peaceful community that preserves cultural and artistic heritage. The temple covers an area of approximately eight rai and has been carefully maintained and developed over time. In 1981 A.D. (B.E. 2524), a new ordination hall (ubosot) was constructed to serve as the main venue for Buddhist monastic ceremonies. Beyond its ritual function, the ordination hall has become a gathering place where the local community regularly makes merit, listens to sermons, and practices Buddhist teachings, confirming the temple’s role as a spiritual anchor for the people of Ban Lum.

Within the temple grounds are important structures that fulfill both religious and cultural purposes. These include the ordination hall, sermon hall, crematorium, crematorium pavilions, and monks’ living quarters. Together, they support the complete cycle of Buddhist activities. Wat Ratchaphruek is not only a place where merit-making ceremonies are performed but also a venue for year-round Buddhist events, such as almsgiving on Buddhist holy days, major festivals like Magha Puja, Visakha Puja, and Asalha Puja, as well as the annual ordination of monks and novices during Buddhist Lent.

The temple also plays a vital role in spreading Buddhist teachings to both the younger generation and the wider community. Monks act as spiritual leaders, guiding people through the Dhamma and encouraging them to live in accordance with Buddhist principles. Through various activities organized at the temple, Buddhist education has been passed down, helping to instill moral values and strengthen community life in both religious and cultural dimensions.

As for the temple’s leadership, the recorded abbot is Phra Khru Suphattaratheera Khun (Sampan), who has served as abbot since 1986 A.D. (B.E. 2529) until the present. Revered and respected by the local community, he has continually developed the temple, from renovating facilities and promoting religious events to fostering strong cooperation between the temple and the people.

Beyond religion, Wat Ratchaphruek is also a cultural treasure. The temple reflects the artistry and dedication of the Ban Lum villagers, who contributed their craftsmanship and collective labor to its creation. The tranquil surroundings, shaded by large trees and landscaped with care, make it an ideal place for meditation and mindfulness practice. It remains a sanctuary where both locals and visitors can find peace of mind and spiritual comfort.

Today, Wat Ratchaphruek is not only an ancient temple but also a hub for cultural and traditional practices at the community level. Annual celebrations such as Songkran, Ok Phansa (End of Buddhist Lent), and Kathina robes offerings illustrate the interwoven bond between religion and culture that continues to thrive in Thai society. The temple thus stands as a place worthy of study, preservation, and reverence—ensuring that it remains a spiritual and cultural landmark for Ban Lum and for future generations to cherish.
