Mueang Uthai Thani Old Town, located in Ban Uthai Thani Old, is a historical site that reflects the city’s prosperity during the Ayutthaya period. Today, the surrounding area has transformed into lush rice fields, offering a serene blend of natural beauty and traces of history. Several temples in the old town preserve important ancient structures, allowing visitors to closely explore Thailand’s history and culture.
Wat Chaeng is one of the most prominent temples that has maintained its original condition. The temple’s prang was originally built in 1638 but was later damaged during Burmese invasions, with its spire broken. The most recent restoration, completed in 1985, carefully preserved the temple’s late Ayutthaya-style architecture. The plaster decorations on the prang and the gable of the ordination hall are crafted in a uniform style, showcasing distinctive craftsmanship. Inside the ordination hall, murals depicting the royal deeds of King Taksin the Great were painted during the restoration, allowing visitors to experience Thai history and culture through artistic expression.
Another noteworthy temple is Wat Hua Muang, located in the Muang Kao subdistrict. The site still contains remnants of an old Ayutthaya-style ordination hall and a small ancient chedi in front of the hall. These structures offer insight into the architectural design and layout of temples in the past. The temples are easily accessible: starting from the Nong Chang Market at the intersection near Thong Prasart Wittaya School, turn right and continue straight to reach Wat Chaeng. Wat Hua Muang is located approximately 1 kilometer beyond Wat Chaeng.
Mueang Uthai Thani Old Town is not only a place for learning about history but also a cultural tourist destination that harmoniously combines nature and heritage. Visitors can explore ancient sites, study architecture and murals, and enjoy the scenic rice fields while experiencing the lifestyle of both past and present communities. A visit to this old town offers a rich and diverse experience of Thai history, art, and culture.
