Thung Thale Luang in Sukhothai Province is a significant water management project that combines natural beauty with community value. The area is located in Ban Kluay and Pak Khwae Subdistricts, Mueang Sukhothai District, covering more than 7,070 rai (approximately 2,782 acres). Of this, 3,755 rai (around 1,480 acres) is water, capable of storing up to 32.40 million cubic meters, while the remaining 3,495 rai (about 1,402 acres) of land hosts government offices, Buddhist centers, and the largest local plant conservation center in Northern Thailand. The reservoir’s design takes the shape of a heart, reflecting the royal initiative of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, aiming to sustainably manage water to address recurring floods and droughts. Beyond agricultural and domestic water supply, Thung Thale Luang also captures floodwater from the north and runoff during the rainy season, ensuring effective water management and minimizing natural disaster impact.

 

At the heart of Thung Thale Luang lies a heart-shaped island, conceptualized by Mr. Somsak Thepsuthin during his tenure as Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives. On this central island stands the Phra Buddha Rattanasiri Sukhothai, a Sukhothai-era Buddha statue in the Maravichai posture. The statue had previously been submerged in the Yom River and was rediscovered in 2003. Its presence not only enhances the sacredness of the area but also serves as a spiritual center for locals and visitors, who come to admire the scenic surroundings.

 

Thung Thale Luang is a “monkey cheek” water management project initiated under the royal initiative to resolve recurring flooding and drought in Sukhothai Province. The project began in 2002, utilizing the historical Thale Luang area as a water retention site. The plan included dredging the land and digging canals to channel water into the reservoir for community use. The reservoir can also accommodate excess rainwater during the rainy season, securing water for agriculture and local communities.

 

Apart from its agricultural and water management functions, Thung Thale Luang serves as an ecological and recreational destination. Visitors can explore the vast water fields and the heart-shaped island, enjoying the serene landscape. The site also hosts cultural and religious events, such as Visakha Bucha and Magha Bucha celebrations, making it a significant center for both spiritual and community activities.
