Wat Sopharam is located in Sam Ruen Subdistrict, Si Samrong District, Sukhothai Province. It is a public temple under the Maha Nikaya order and serves as a significant religious and cultural landmark for the local community and the Sukhothai region. The temple was originally known as “Wat Rong Yuan” or “Wat Lam Yuan”, as it was established by Vietnamese immigrants who settled in the area and built the temple as a center for both religious practice and community life. Historical evidence can still be seen in the foundations of the ubosot (ordination hall), vihara, chedis, and ancient Buddha images, reflecting the temple’s religious heritage and valuable architectural legacy.

 

Wat Sopharam received the Wisungkhamasima (official boundary for sacred Buddhist areas) in 1827. Later, in 1957, the temple’s name was changed to “Wat Sopharam” to reflect its renewed identity while preserving its historical heritage. This renaming was also part of efforts to promote the temple as a spiritual center for the community and an important place for Buddhist practice.

 

In 1993, Wat Sopharam established a large outdoor Buddha image called “Phra Buddha Baramee Si Sukhothai”, seated in the Sukhothai-style Maravijaya posture. The golden-hued statue has become a focal point of devotion for local residents. Its construction was made possible through the combined efforts of the abbot and the local Buddhist community, who contributed both funds and labor, demonstrating their faith and unity in preserving religion and local culture.

 

With a history spanning over 200 years, Wat Sopharam reflects the migration of foreign communities, cultural integration, and the enduring Buddhist faith in Sukhothai. The temple serves not only as a place of worship but also as a symbol of cultural heritage.
