Hup Pa Tat in Uthai Thani Province is one of Thailand’s most unique natural attractions, located not far from Khao Pla Ra. The entrance to Hup Pa Tat is situated about 1 kilometer before reaching Khao Pla Ra, along the same access route. This hidden forest was first discovered in 1979 (B.E. 2522) by Phra Khru Santithammakosol, also known as Luang Pho Thongyod, the abbot of Wat Tham Thong. During his exploration, he climbed down into the valley and found a remarkable forest filled with tad trees—an ancient plant species belonging to the palm family that has existed for millions of years. In 1984 (B.E. 2527), a cave passage was excavated to serve as the main entrance for visitors.

The Royal Forest Department later declared Hup Pa Tat a conservation area under the supervision of the Tham Pratun Wildlife Sanctuary due to its unusual geographical features and the presence of rare plant species such as giant fishtail palm, Pelao, Khad Khao Lek, and ground jackfruit, among others. Entering Hup Pa Tat requires walking through a dark cave passage, so carrying a flashlight is highly recommended. After a short walk, visitors will emerge into a massive sinkhole where sunlight filters down, revealing the hidden tropical-like forest that lies within.

The moment one steps inside, the atmosphere feels as though you have traveled back in time to the prehistoric era. The landscape resembles a dense tropical rainforest with high humidity, towering limestone cliffs enclosing the area, and limited sunlight that only reaches the forest floor around midday. This creates a cool, shaded environment where unique flora thrives. The designated walking trail stretches approximately 700 meters round-trip and takes about 30 minutes to complete, offering a memorable and immersive natural experience.

Hup Pa Tat is not only a destination for nature lovers but also a valuable site for ecological study and conservation. The forest supports a delicate ecosystem, providing habitat for various plant species, insects, and other wildlife unique to the area. To preserve this natural wonder, access is regulated. Entrance fees are set at 20 baht for Thai adults, 10 baht for Thai children, and 200 baht for foreign visitors. The revenue contributes to maintaining the sanctuary and protecting its biodiversity.

Travelers planning a visit should bring along a flashlight for the cave passage and insect repellent due to the humid conditions that attract mosquitoes. It is also important to practice responsible tourism by not littering or disturbing the natural environment. Hup Pa Tat is considered a priceless natural heritage site, deserving of preservation for future generations.

For those seeking a truly extraordinary adventure unlike typical forest treks, Hup Pa Tat is a must-visit destination. The striking scenery of ancient tad trees thriving in a hidden valley, surrounded by dramatic limestone cliffs, offers a serene and otherworldly atmosphere. The site is ideal for relaxation, ecological learning, and photography amid untouched nature.
