The Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine, located in Chonburi Province, is a sacred site deeply revered by the people of Koh Sichang. It sits atop a hill to the north of Thawiwong Pier. The shrine itself is a natural cave that has been transformed into a beautiful religious sanctuary, blending Thai and Chinese architectural styles harmoniously. From the shrine’s grounds, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the houses and coastline at the front of the island, making it not only a spiritual destination but also a serene scenic viewpoint.
The origins of the Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine are closely tied to Koh Sichang’s prosperous maritime trading history. Hundreds of years ago, Koh Sichang was a bustling hub for sea trade. At that time, countless ships would anchor around the island to load and unload goods, even without a formal pier. This was possible thanks to the island’s ideal geographic location. It lies just 12 kilometers off the coast and is close to the mouths of the Chao Phraya and Bang Pakong rivers, areas surrounded by densely populated communities. The surrounding smaller islands act as a natural shield against strong waves and storms, allowing vessels to dock safely. Additionally, the sea channels around Koh Sichang are deep enough for large cargo ships to anchor without the risk of running aground or hitting rocky reefs. These natural advantages turned Koh Sichang into a key strategic point for trade in Thailand during that era.
Many of the trading vessels at the time were Chinese junks, operated by Chinese merchants. These traders noticed something mysterious: at night, a glowing light would often appear atop the steep mountain at the island’s tip, now known as Khao Khaya Sira. Intrigued, they explored the area and discovered a cave containing a naturally formed rock that resembled a seated figure. Believing this to be a powerful guardian spirit, they began making offerings and prayers, especially for success and prosperity in their trade. When their prayers were fulfilled, their reverence deepened, and they came together to build the Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine as an act of devotion and gratitude. Historical records confirm that the shrine has existed since at least 1892. Over time, the shrine’s reputation for sacred power spread far and wide, attracting devotees from both Thailand and neighboring countries. Many people of Chinese descent from places like Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong have traveled here to pay their respects, making the shrine a spiritual and cultural landmark.
As the number of devotees grew, the local community and followers of Chao Pho Khao Yai began organizing an annual festival dedicated to him. This major event is held approximately 45 days after the Chinese New Year. It has become one of the most important cultural and spiritual celebrations on Koh Sichang, drawing both tourists and pilgrims. The festival not only includes religious rituals but also showcases cultural performances and activities that highlight the community’s enduring faith.
In addition to the main cave shrine of Chao Pho Khao Yai, there are several other sacred sites within the same area. Visitors can pay their respects to multiple deities in one trip, including the Guanyin Shrine, the Eight Immortals Shrine, the Chao Pho Khum Sap Shrine, the Sangkachai Pavilion, the Pae Ma – Pae Gong Shrine, the Sun Wukong Shrine, and the Wu Tai Gong Shrine. Each of these places carries its own spiritual meaning and significance, reflecting the diverse traditions and beliefs of the local community.
Several key ceremonies are held throughout the year at the shrine. About two weeks before the Chinese New Year, the "Orange Receiving Ceremony" and the "Closing of the Talisman Ceremony" are performed, marking the start of auspicious events as determined by a spiritual master. On Chinese New Year’s Day, a traditional worship ceremony takes place. Around 45 days later, the grand annual worship festival for Chao Pho Khao Yai is held, featuring vibrant rituals, lively gatherings, and a strong sense of unity among the community and visitors.
Today, the Chao Pho Khao Yai Shrine serves as both a spiritual center and a historical landmark, representing the blending of Thai and Chinese cultures through centuries of shared heritage. It continues to be a place where people come to seek blessings, express gratitude, and experience the unique history of Koh Sichang. Visitors are drawn not only by their faith but also by the island’s natural beauty and its deep connection to Thailand’s maritime past. For anyone traveling to Chonburi, this shrine is a must-visit destination that combines spirituality, cultural discovery, and breathtaking scenery.
