The Prison (Kook Kee Kai), also known by some historians as the French Fort, is an important historical site in Chanthaburi Province, Thailand, with a history closely linked to the period of French influence in the country. In 1893 (B.E. 2436), during a territorial dispute over the left bank of the Mekong River, the French occupied Chanthaburi. The prison was built to detain Thai prisoners who resisted French control. It is located near the Red Building in Pak Nam Laem Sing Subdistrict, Laem Sing District, about one kilometer from the pier.

The architecture of The Prison (Kook Kee Kai) is a square-shaped building measuring approximately 4 meters in width and 10 meters in height, with two rows of ventilation openings and a ventilated roof. According to local accounts, the prison was extremely harsh because the upper floor was used as a chicken coop, and droppings from the chickens would fall onto the prisoners below. However, some historians argue that the structure was never intended as a prison but was built as an observation fort in conjunction with the Red Building for strategic purposes during the French occupation.

The Prison (Kook Kee Kai) was registered as a historical site by the Fine Arts Department on December 18, 1996, and was restored earlier in 1972 to preserve the building for educational purposes and to allow visitors to study history easily. The site serves as a symbol of the historical relationship between Thailand and France and demonstrates the architectural techniques used in European-style fortifications during the reign of King Rama V. Its design reflects both strategic use and methods for controlling prisoners.

The prison is located approximately 30 kilometers from Chanthaburi town. Visitors can take Highway 3 (Chanthaburi-Trat Route) and turn right onto Highway 3149. Before reaching Laem Sing District, the building is on the right-hand side. It is conveniently close to the Red Building, allowing tourists to explore both historical sites in one visit.

Beyond its historical importance, The Prison (Kook Kee Kai) offers insights into European-influenced architecture in Thailand during the late 19th century. Its square design, ventilation features, and raised roof demonstrate practical techniques for fort construction and prisoner management. The site has been preserved and made accessible to visitors, promoting historical tourism and educational opportunities for both Thai and international visitors.

Today, The Prison (Kook Kee Kai) stands not only as a significant historical landmark but also as a symbol of Thai resilience and perseverance against foreign occupation. Visiting the site allows people to understand the historical context, experience the architecture firsthand, and appreciate the struggles of the Thai people during that era. Its restoration and preservation continue to provide educational and cultural value, ensuring the stories of the past remain alive for future generations.
