Ban Khok Mo Weaving The local weaving center at Ban Khok Mo in Uthai Thani Province is a remarkable cultural destination that reflects the traditional way of life and heritage of the Lao Khrang people, who migrated from Vientiane during the early Rattanakosin period. The villagers of Ban Khok Mo are highly skilled in weaving, and their craftsmanship has been passed down through generations for more than 200 years, making it a valuable cultural legacy. After completing their rice farming duties, women in the village dedicate their time to weaving, turning their spare time into productive work that supports their families.
The uniqueness of Ban Khok Mo’s woven fabrics lies in their intricate techniques, such as Mudmee To Teen Jok (ikat combined with supplementary weft), and traditional Yok Dok Lai Cherng textiles, featuring age-old patterns like Lai Dan Muang Lao (Lao border motif), Lai Nak (serpent motif), and Lai Dan Yai (grand border motif). In the past, villagers used lac (krang) as a natural dye, creating vibrant, long-lasting colors that harmonized with nature. Although weaving methods have adapted to modern times, the traditional charm and authentic artistry remain intact, ensuring that this heritage is preserved for future generations.
There are two weaving centers in Ban Khok Mo that welcome visitors and offer handwoven products. The first is the Ban Khok Mo Weaving Center, located beside Wat Khok Mo, specializing in silk weaving with refined designs and exquisite craftsmanship. Visitors can contact the center at +66 5698 6089 for more information. The second is the Demonstration and Sales Center of the Ban Khok Mo Weaving Group in Moo 2, behind the Khok Mo Subdistrict Administrative Organization. This group focuses on cotton weaving, using natural dyes to produce fabrics that appeal to those who appreciate simplicity and eco-friendly products.
Traveling to Ban Khok Mo is convenient. From Thap Than District, take Highway 3013 toward Sawang Arom District for about 10 kilometers, then turn onto Highway 3456. From there, follow the signs to turn left toward Ban Khok Mo, about 4 kilometers further. The weaving group is located right next to Wat Khok Mo, accessible by private car or local transportation. It is an ideal destination for travelers who want to experience rural lifestyles while learning about ancient weaving traditions.
Ban Khok Mo textiles are not only beautiful handicrafts but also symbols of cultural identity and community pride, representing centuries of Lao Khrang heritage. Visiting this weaving village offers more than just the opportunity to purchase high-quality handwoven fabrics it is also a cultural journey into history, tradition, and the resilience of local wisdom. For those exploring Uthai Thani, Ban Khok Mo is a cultural tourism site well worth a visit.
