Mok Fa Waterfall is a compact, single-tier waterfall tucked away along the Mae Malai–Pai Road (Highway 1095) in Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Its charm does not lie in dramatic height or grandeur, but in the genuine sense of pause it offers: lush green forest, the steady sound of flowing water throughout most of the year, and the feeling of stepping off the main road into a natural setting that remains refreshingly uncontrived.

 

The lasting image of Mok Fa Waterfall is a stream of water cascading down a single rock face. At the base, there are small pools and natural rock formations where visitors can sit, listen to the water, and allow their thoughts to slow down with the rhythm of the forest. The surrounding vegetation thrives on moisture, creating a consistently shaded and cool atmosphere, especially during the late rainy season through early winter, when the forest turns vibrant green and the air feels particularly pleasant.

 

One of the key advantages of this waterfall is that it is close enough for a comfortable day trip from Chiang Mai, yet still offers a genuine nature trail experience. From the main entrance, visitors must continue along a dirt road for about 2 kilometers, followed by a further walk of approximately 2 kilometers on foot (the exact walking distance may vary depending on parking conditions and the state of the trail). This balance is part of its appeal: enough physical effort to feel rewarding, without requiring full trekking expertise.

 

The area is managed under Doi Suthep–Pui National Park, which provides official information and oversight for the site. Visitors are encouraged to respect park regulations by carrying out all trash, keeping noise to a minimum, and avoiding swimming during periods of high water or immediately after heavy rainfall. Water levels and currents can change rapidly, particularly in the rainy season, when dirt and gravel roads may also become slippery.

 

Getting There From Chiang Mai city, drive along Highway 107 (Chiang Mai–Fang) to the Mae Malai intersection, then turn left onto the Mae Malai–Pai Road (Highway 1095). After approximately 20 kilometers, a left turn leads to the waterfall access road. Continue along a dirt road for about 2 kilometers to the walking point, then proceed on foot for another 2 kilometers to reach the waterfall. Buses are not recommended due to narrow and steep sections of the road. Public transport is possible by taking a Chiang Mai–Pai bus from the Arcade Bus Terminal and getting off near the entrance, followed by a walk to the waterfall.
